Impact of the Europeans The Europeans had a negative and positive impact on the Virgin Islands. The negative includes diseases and crime. The positive impact includes education and religion. Religious people in their churches taught the blacks (Africans) how to read and write formal education in the Virgin Islands began in 1789. The Methodist,Angilcan, and other churches were responsible for education for several years. The school buildings actual meeting places for churches and so by design they were in one room and did not have the necessary facilities for school. These church schools catered to primary school aged students from infants to post primary. The subjects taught at the primary level were math, language arts, and social studies. They were taught by single teachers.
