Summary
These notes cover various aspects of immune cells. The document details the different types of cells involved in the immune response and their functions, including diagrams and tables to illustrate important concepts such as endocytosis and phagocytosis by macrophages in detail. It goes on to describe the function of important innate immune system cells such as polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN leukocytes), macrophages, dendritic cells, and natural killer cells.

Cells involved in Immune System Endocytosis and phagocytosis by Macrophage s Cells involved in Innate Immune System Upon activation these cells contact with foreign bodies and produce active soluble substances. These cells includes: 1. Polymorphonuclear leukocytes. PMN leukocytes: 2. Macrophages : 3. Dendritic cells 4. Natural killer cells 1. (Granulocytes): includes A. Basophiles. B. Mast cells C. Eosinophils D. Neutrophils Granulocytes are: 1. short lived phagocytes cells that contain enzyme rich lysosomes. 2. Produce peroxide and superoxide radicals 3. Some lysosome contain bactericidal protein such as Lactoferrin Granulocytes are: 1. short lived phagocytes cells that contain enzyme rich lysosomes. 2. Produce peroxide and superoxide radicals 3. Some lysosome contain bactericidal protein such as Lactoferrin Macrophages Macrophages are phagocytes derived from blood monocytes. Monocyte characterized by: 1. Small cells 2. Spherical cell with projection 3. Abundant cytoplasm 4. Little endoplasmic reticulum 5. Many granules Monocytes undergo differentiation into a verity histological form including: 1. Kupffer cells: in the liver 2. Alveolar macrophages: in the lung 3. Splenic Macrophages: in the spleen 4. Peritoneal macrophages: floating in the peritoneal fluid. 5. Microglial cells: in the central nervous system. These cells constitute part of the cellular member of resticuendothelial system(RES). RES function is to phagocytes microorganism and foreign substances that invade blood stream and various tissue. Dendritic Cells Long lived and reside in an immature state in most tissue. Found in the skin and called langerhans cells 2. 4 Mononuclear phagocytes (monocytes & macrophages) Relative representation Cell type (%) Neutrophil granulocytes 60 - 70 Eosinophil granulocytes 1-3 Basophil granulocytes
