# Despoblamiento de colmenas The collapse of beehives is one of the biggest problems that beekeepers face worldwide. One in three crops consumed by humans is pollinated by bees. Bees are considered the most important insect for humans. ## Economic importance to humans ## Global phenomenon and main causes * 35% mortality of bees * **Pesticides:** Neurotoxic insecticides such as neonicotinoids, used in pest control, affect the bee nervous system. * **Parasites and viruses:** The parasites *Varroa destructor* and *Nosema apis* have been identified as possible causes for bee mortality. The action of 18 types of viruses that affect bees is added. * **Environmental stress:** Phenomena such as climate change result in less food available for bees, particularly pollen. Pollen scarcity has been a common factor in affected beehives. ## A possible hypothesis about the disappearance of beehives One of the hypotheses for the sudden disappearance of beehives is that insecticides affect the bee nervous system. ## Graphic representation of the main causes of beehive collapse * **Insects:** Devourers and pests eat crops. * **Pesticides:** Pesticides and insecticides are applied to plants and crops for control. * **Bees:** The bee approaches to collect nectar, coming into contact with chemical substances. * **Substances:** Substances such as neonicotinoids attack the bee nervous system. * **Animals:** Bees are disoriented, do not find their way back to the hive and die away from it. * **Beehives:** The beehives are left empty.
