# BiPAP Modes * **Spontaneous mode** - the patient determines the ventilatory rate, while the ventilator controls the IPAP and EPAP by varying the flow rate. The breath is spontaneously triggered (flow) and flow cycled. * **Spontaneous-timed mode** - allows the clinician to set a backup rate in case the patient's spontaneous rate falls below a set threshold. If this happens, the ventilator initiates a breath independent of the patient's effort. If the patient resumes spontaneous breathing above the rate threshold, no additional breaths are triggered. This mode acts as a "safety" in the event the patient becomes apneic. # Pressure Support Pressure support is a form of assisted or augmented (ventilator) spontaneous breath when, during inspiration, pressure is applied. * All breaths are pressure or flow triggered * The pressure is targeted and the flow is cycled * The patient triggers the breaths
