GEENG1 Purposive Communication Prelim Topic 1 COMMUNICATION PROCESSES, PRINCIPLES AND ETHICS Professor: Ma. Arlen F. Arellado, Ed. D. Learning Outcomes At the end of the lessons, students shall have been able to: Define communication Discuss the process of communication Determine the principles that help communication successful; and Explain the ethics of communication. On Communication 1. Did you ever talk to somebody, an urgent, important concern, and how did that person react? – Did he hear you? – Did he listen to you? – Did he understand you? – What was your reaction to his response? Which of these is very common? Why? Why does God give us 2 ears and only one mouth? Why is Communication important? 2. How do you usually express your likes and dislikes? 3. How do you use your phone? Can you make a pie chart of the % of your phone communication? Maybe 5 most common. Why is Communication important? - In school - At home - In public places - Alone - In online classes - Etc. What Communication is and Why is it Important? Communication: - the process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others by creating meaning through the use of verbal and nonverbal messages. 2. Competence in communication and expertise with the skills are valuable in strengthening and building relationships, in getting employed and in maintaining healthy living. 3. Every good and lasting relationship is founded on good communication. 4. Family communication is the largest single factor determining the kinds of relationships with others. Individual’s early communication with parents has a profound effects on one’s self concept and self- worth. Open communication with family members – good relationship begins at home and determines how a person interacts with others. 5. The better the communication skills, the more employable the person is. 6. Social support system – friends and family members – makes a difference in a peron’s overall health and quality of life. 7. Lack of close relationships can lead to ill health and even death. 8. Good friends and intimate relationships with others help manage stress and contribute to both physical and emotional health. Context 3. Decoding 8. Noise 4. Receiver 9. Feedback 5. Message Primary Principles of Miscommunication: 1. Be aware of your communication with yourself and others. - intrapersonal and interpersonal communication – thoughts, emotions, perception of yourself and others. - Do you self-talk? When? Often or sometimes? Why? 2. Effectively use and interpret verbal messages. - use clear, precise words - make effort to understand the messages of others 3. Effectively use and interpret nonverbal messages (though these may be misunderstood at times) 4. Listen and respond thoughtfully to others. - stop and focus on what others are saying. - look for nonverbal clues - listen to both ideas and the major details - be precise, accurate and timely 5. The value of truth 2. Respect for another person’s dignity 3. The expectation that innocent people should not suffer harm Christians & Traber (1997) Ethics in Communication (online references) 1.Honesty: Avoid misleading others. 2.Respect:Treat others with respect. 3.Confidentiality: Protect sensitive information and do not disclose it without permission. 4.Transparency: Be open and clear about your intentions. 6.Responsibility - since we must take ownership of your words and their impact the consequences of actions can lead to things we face in our lives. 7. Avoid a negative tone - to maintain a peaceful conversation - it is advisable to talk in a manner that does not sound intimidating, and in a friendly tone. 8. Avoid speaking for others - if asked about certain questions and the person being asked is not around, refrain from answering on their behalf. 9. Speak from your own experience - we should refrain from fabricating stories that might only ruin our image to others once find out that we just concocted it 10. Strive to understand - mishearing or misunderstanding during a discussion is inevitable. do not hesitate for clarification to better understand the conversation. 11. Consider the Receiver's Preferred Communication Channel 12. Respect others' opinions 13. Avoid using a harsh voice when others are speaking. 14. Explain its effects on communication; and, 4. Argue for and against the positive effects of globalization on society. What for you is globalization? What are its impact in the modern generation? Compare the old and the modern time. – Give examples What are the pros and cons? Globalization describes the growing interdependence of the world's economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross- border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information. Countries have built economic partnerships to facilitate these movements over many centuries. Communication and Globalization..
