Information Sheet Q1 – 2.2 LESSON NO. 2 TAKING CARE OF THE COMPUTER AND YOURSELF Learning Objectives: After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to: 1. List down the ways in taking care of computer units 2. Identify the ways in taking care of the computer units 3. Relate the importance of taking care of computer units into your everyday life HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THE COMPUTER? Computers are very important in education, doing business, make research, and other functions. Almost all household have computers (laptop or desktop). As users, we must learn how to take care of our computer units for it to last longer. Here are some ways on how to take care of our computer units. 1. Prevent placing your computer under the table or on the floor. This is because the dust around the air will accumulate inside your CPU. 2. Regularly clean all the dust which accumulated inside your CPU and keyboard. This is because, the dust will cause the heat sink and cooling fans to work improperly. Eventually, this will cause overheating which is a serious problem for your computer. 3. Prevent placing things which have magnetism near your computer or storage device as it will erase the data inside the storage device. 4. Prevent to place your food or drinks near your computer. 5. Place your computer in a well-ventilated room especially room-temperature is always the best choice. ICT EDUCATION GRADE 4 6. Make sure that your computer have sufficient of power supply as insufficient of power will cause malfunction of hardware. It is recommend to use an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), it is a battery which charges all the time where it supply electricity to your computer if there is a stop in electricity supply to your house. This enable you to save all your files and shutdown in a proper way within the time period before it run off of battery. 7. Do shutdown your computer in the proper way. Don’t force to restart your computer if the situation does not require you to do so. Terminate or close all the programs before shutdown your computer. 8. Do check that all your cables inside or outside of your CPU are in good working conditions in order to prevent electricity leakage which will causes short circuit within your computer. 9. It is recommend to install Security Software such as Anti- virus in your computer to protect yourself and your computer. Do a regularly scan for your computer to prevent files being infected by viruses. 10. Beware when you’re downloading files from the Internet, do not download the file if you are not familiar to the type of the file as it stand a chance to harm your computer. 11. Resolve the errors in your computer regularly. Follow these few steps to check for errors in your computer: -Go to “My Computer” then right-click on the drive which you wish to check for errors. -Click “Properties” in the drop-down list. -Select the “Tools” tab from the top tab list. -Under the “Error Checking” category, click “Check Now”. -Check the box for “Automatically fix files system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery bad sectors”. ICT EDUCATION GRADE 4 12. Keep your software up-to-date Your computer will prompt you if there are software updates. It is important that you keep your software up-to-date, including your operating system to fix bugs, glitches, and vulnerabilities of the previous version. They also strengthen the security of your computer. Some computers perform automatic updates. 13. Clean your Recycle Bin regularly. 14. Regularly practice Disk Defragment as this will help in increase the performance of your Hard-Disk. For Laptop users: 15. Basically, Laptop generates a lot of heat especially you are doing high performance task like 3D gaming. Get yourself a better cooling fan to help your laptop to decrease it’s temperature. 16. Don't pull on the power cord.
