Chapter 12 – The Cloud 4.3 – Online Software Applications can be either one of two types. 1. Hosted Applications These are applications which are not downloaded, rather they run on an online server. They are only available with an internet connection. They are affected by bandwidth and latency. Hence application loading time can be affected. To avoid issues with bandwidth and latency, hosted applications usually offer less features. Since they are on a server, users can share the files and work on them collaboratively. Examples are the web version of Word vs the download version or even Google Docs. 2. Locally Installed Software Applications can also be locally installed. This would not require an internet connection to be used. User experience wouldn’t be affected by bandwidth/latency. However, they use computer storage, taking up space that could be used by more important software. HOSTED APPLICATIONS Benefits Drawbacks Accessible from any connected device Only accessible using an internet connection Uses online data storage so space is saved on local Bandwidth and Latency affect performance storage Features enable collaborative working Is limited with features Edexcel IGCSE ICT Revision Notes Youssef 1 Koraitem Online data storage can also be used rather than local storage, and this has several benefits and drawbacks. ONLINE DATA STORAGE Benefits Drawbacks Automatic Backup Data Protection Issues Scalable Storage (Can be expanded) Dependent on Provider for Security Sharing data is easier Slower Transfer Speeds Unlimited Storage could be offered Internet Connection Required Enables Collaboration Not all Software Available (e.g., Access) Local Storage Space saved Payment required for expanding storage The Impact of the Cloud The Cloud – The Internet when it is used for providing software or space to store information rather than local storage. Hosted applications and online storage are both examples of cloud-based services. With the introduction of this technology, local software providers have had to find ways to improve their software, mostly by offering more features so that they remain competitive. Cloud based services provide access to the services mentioned in Chapter 11 as well as the online communities mentioned in Chapter 8. Edexcel IGCSE ICT Revision Notes Youssef 2 Koraitem
