# The Elizabethan Religious Settlement The Elizabethan Religious Settlement was a set of arrangements in 1559 aimed at establishing a broadly based national Church. ## Key Terms * **Royal Supremacy**: The monarch is the head of the Church. * **Pilgrimage**: A journey to a religious monument, shrine, or place. * **Saints**: Someone who lived a holy life, considered important by the Catholic Church. ## Transubstantiation The Catholic belief that the bread and wine in communion become the body and blood of Christ. Protestants did not agree with this view. ## The Act of Uniformity This Act required everyone to attend church on Sundays and other holy days, or face a fine of one shilling. Labourers could earn up to three pence a day, skilled craftsmen up to four pence, and servants between eight and nine pence a week. ## Royal Injunctions These further established the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity, covering issues like: * All clergy teaching Royal Supremacy. * Reporting those who refused to attend church to the Privy Council. * Each parish having a copy of the English Bible. * Banning pilgrimages and fake miracles. * Clergy wearing specific vestments. ## Elizabethan Religious Settlement Success and Failures This settlement largely succeeded in establishing a broadly based national church, but failed to attract Puritans, and devout Catholics felt marginalized, which encouraged opposition and non-conformity. The settlement had mixed success. ## Exam Tip To earn full marks, describe two features of the Elizabethan religious settlement, providing supporting information for each. Fully developed sentences are key.
