# Newton's Laws of Motion ## Newton's First Law If a body is at rest, it will remain at rest, and a body with uniform motion will remain in uniform motion until an unbalanced force is applied. Inertia of a body will remain the same until a force is applied. Force is required to change the state of a body. ## Concept of Mass Mass is the measure of actual content present in a body. * Scaler quantity * Measured by scales * The SI unit is kilogram (kg) Inertia is a property of mass (the more mass, the more inertia) ## Momentum Momentum is the quantity of motion contained in a body. It is the product of the mass of a body and its velocity. It is a vector quantity. * Measured by kg m/s * Momentum of a body is directly proportional to the mass and velocity of the body. * The direction is the same as the direction of velocity $p = m \times v$ ## Newton's Second Law * **Formula of Force** $F = \frac{\Delta p}{\Delta t}$ * **Quantity of force** Rate of [Change in momentum] * Rate of change of momentum is directly proportional to the external unbalanced force applied on the body. * If momentum requires a huge change in less time, the force required is more. * If momentum requires a small change in more time, the force required is less.
