HOPE 4 LESSON I: NATURE AND BACKGROUND OF OUTDOOR RECREATION WHAT IS RECREATION? WHAT IS RECREATION? Recreation is derived from the Latin word “recreare” which means to be refreshed. Therefore, recreational activities depends one’s interests, pursuits, and needs which may be reflective of one’s beliefs and level of gratification. For example, a natural park may serve as a bonding place for a family to have picnic, a great fitness area for a jogger, and a place to commune with nature or meditate for others. The outdoor is a space outside an enclosed area. Outdoors includes the natural environment and resources which comprises the land, water, wildlife, vegetation, open space, and scenery. People engage in outdoor recreational activities for varied reasons. People engage in outdoor recreational activities for varied reasons. Some do it for personal satisfaction and enjoyment. Physical Health Benefits – Being outdoors prevents a person from having sedentary life. It allows people to move, whether by walking, running, swimming, biking, paddling, etc. 2. Psycho-emotional Benefits – It helps people to rest, relax, de-stress or unwind, and feel revitalized. 3. Social Benefits – This is the great way to unite and make the family closer to each other. It also promotes socialization with other people, making friends with them and share experiences. 4. Economic Benefits – It promotes ecotourism in the Philippines that helps our economy grow and sustain people with jobs. 5. Spiritual Beliefs – Being with the nature brings us into calmness and provide a peaceful environment that allows us to talk God in our midst. It also heals, rejuvenates, and soothes the body and soul. Principle 2: Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Stick to established trails, campsites, and surfaces to prevent damage to fragile ecosystems. Principle 3: Dispose waste properly Pack out all trash, food scraps, and litter, and dispose of human waste responsibly. Principle 4: Leave what you find Preserve the environment by not disturbing natural features, wildlife, or cultural artifacts. Principle 5: Minimize campfire impact Use a camp stove instead of making a fire; if fires are necessary, use existing fire rings and keep them small. Principle 6: Respect Wildlife Observe animals from a distance, avoid feeding them, and store food properly to prevent attracting wildlife. Principle 7: Be considerate of other visitors Keep noise levels low, share space, and respect others’ experiences in nature.
