Drug Scenario in the Philippines UNIT II: HEALTH | Prevention of Substance Use and Abuse Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to describe the drug scenario in the Philippines. Drug problem in the country Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency The Philippines is experiencing many problems that hinder further progress. One of these is the drug menace. Since these past years, the rise in the number of illegal drug users in the country has been alarming. According to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), more than three million Filipinos are hooked on drugs. The drug menace is now considered a dreadful social problem. It has become a major threat that can turn the country into a narco- state shortly. The scale of this menace is unusual compared with the data of drug problems of the country from the past years. Its effect upon the country’s social development is a serious situation that the government is now handling Factors that influence sustance use and abuse UNIT II: HEALTH | Prevention of Substance Use and Abuse Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to Explain the concept of substance use, misuse, abuse, and dependence; Describe what drug addiction is; Explain how drug addiction happens; Describe the two types of dependence; and State why people abuse the use of drugs. Drug Misuse Drug misuse is the harmful use of drugs that is different from its intended purpose. This includes not following the instructions. Because some drugs can be harmful or dangerous if they are not used properly, following instructions in the use of any medicine is very important. Taking a medicine after the expiration date and using someone else’s prescription medicine are also considered as drug misuse. Drug Abuse Drug abuse is using a harmful or illegal drug on purpose. Taking a medicine more than what a physician prescribes and using a prescription drug without a prescription are considered as drug abuse. Drug Addiction Some drugs produce lasting effects that can cause individuals to have the urge to use the mover and over. When one abuses the uses of drugs over a period of time, he/she develops drug addiction. An individual who is addicted to a certain drug has uncontrollable craving for the drug because he/she has become dependent on it. Dependence on a certain drug means needing and using it in order to function normally. A drug-dependent person will also experience negative withdrawal symptoms if he/she stops using the drug. Why people take Drugs? When he/she stops using a drug, he/she may cause negative withdrawal symptoms such as cramps, fever, vomiting, anxiety, trembling, and nausea. Psychological dependence is the result of an individual’s repeated use of a certain drug for emotional or social reasons. A person who is psychologically dependent craves the drug strongly to feel less anxious around others or to escape Psychological from fear, sadness, or problems.
