# Religious Texts in Buddhism ## Schools of Buddhism * **Theravada:** "Teachings of the elders" * **Mahayana:** "Great Vehicle" * **Vajrayana:** "Diamond Vehicle" or "Thunderbolt Vehicle" ## The Tipitaka The sacred book of Buddhism is called the Tipitaka. It can also be known as the Pali Canon. It's central to the Theravada Buddhist tradition. The name "Tipitaka" is derived from two Pali words: "Tipi" and "taka", meaning "baskets". This refers to the three sections (baskets) into which the Buddha scriptures are divided. The Tipitaka is written in Pali, an ancient Indian language, and is the religious language of Theravada Buddhism. This language is closely related to the language that the Buddha himself would have spoken.
