Agencies involved in occupational health and safety. DEFINITION Occupational safety and health (OSH) or occupational health and safety (OHS) is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the safety. Health, and welfare of people at work (ie, while performing duties required by one’s occupation) medicine and occupational hygiene and aligns with workplace health promotion initiative OSH also protects all the general public who may be affected by the occupational environment. 1. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH TEAM MEMBERS Occupational Health Nurse Conducts health assessments, monitors employee health, provides first aid, coordinates health programs, educates employees on workplace hazards, and advises on health and safety practices. Occupational Health Physician Diagnoses work-related illnesses, provides medical exams for employment, manages employee health conditions related to work, advises on occupational hazards, and supports workplace policies on health. Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Analyzes work environments to identify potential risks, ensures compliance with safety regulations, conducts training on workplace safety, investigates incidents, and recommends improvements. Industrial Hygienist Identifies and evaluates workplace hazards (e.g., chemical, biological, physical), designs controls to mitigate hazards, and monitors air quality and exposure levels. Ergonomist Studies workplace design to prevent injuries, assesses physical demands of tasks, recommends ergonomic adjustments, and educates on proper body mechanics. Occupational Health Psychologist Addresses mental health issues related to work, advises on stress management, supports employees coping with trauma or harassment, and promotes mental well-being. Environmental Health and Safety Manager Oversees company policies on health and safety, ensures regulatory compliance, manages waste and hazardous materials, and leads sustainability initiatives. 2. AGENCIES INVOLVED IN OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) U.S. agency that sets and enforces workplace safety standards, provides training, and conducts inspections. NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) Conducts research on occupational health and safety, provides recommendations, and develops standards. HSE (Health and Safety Executive) U.K. agency responsible for health and safety regulations, enforcing laws, and providing guidance on workplace safety. WHO (World Health Organization) Sets global standards for occupational health, provides technical support to countries, and conducts research on workplace health. EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Regulates environmental aspects related to workplace safety, such as hazardous waste disposal and pollution control. ILO (International Labour Organization) Sets international labor standards, including health and safety guidelines, and promotes safe working conditions worldwide. Local Government Health Departments Enforce local workplace health and safety regulations, provide resources, and support workplace health initiatives.
