The Nanoworld Presented by Group 9 Lesson Objectives: define nanotechnology; list the uses and applications of nanotechnology; and evaluate the impact of nanotechnology in our society. Origin of Nanotechnology The term "nano-technology" was first used by Norio Taniguchi in 1974, though it was not widely known. Inspired by Feynman's concepts, K. Eric Drexler used the term "nanotechnology" in his 1986 book Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology, which proposed the idea of a nanoscale "assembler" that would be able to build a copy of itself and of other items of arbitrary complexity with atom-level control. NANOMETER A nanometer is a unit of measurement for length just as you have with meters and centimeters. A nanometer is one billionth of a meter, 0.000000001 or 10-9 meters. The word nano comes from the Greek word for “dwarf.” The term nanoscale is used to refer to objects with dimensions on the order of 1-100 nanometers (nm). NANOSCALE AND NANOSTRUCTURES Nanotechnology It refers to the scientific study It Involves operating at a very small and utilization of very small dimensions and it allows scientists to structures whose size ranges make use of the exceptional optical, between 1 nanometer (nm) up to chemical, physical, mechanical, and 100 nanometers. The term "nano" biological qualities of materials of that originated from the Greek word small scale. nanos which means dwarf UNIQUE FEATURES OF NANOSCALE Scale at which biology 1 occurs Scale at which quantum 2 effects dominate properties of materials Scale at which surfaces and 3 interfaces play a large role in materials properties and interactions NANOTECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES Through its attached agency the Philippine Council for Advance Science and Technology Research and Development, the Department of Science and Technology developed a roadmap for the goals and future of Nanotechnology in the country. Electronics Energy Agriculture Medicine Food Processing Environment ELECTRONICS ICT AND semiconductors that have ongoing research and development on GaAs nanorods CNTs Quantum Dots Tinay Crystals used in the production of medical sensors and solar cells Fabrication of nanodevices AGRICULTURE Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles (MSNs) are also utilized to deliver DNA to animals and plant cells in order to facilitate genes transformation and expression Standards setting for fertilizers, cost effective pesticides and other agrochemicals that contain nanomaterials Intelligent sensor actuator system are also being explored in the order to improve the agriculture sector of the country. FOOD PROCESSING Edible coats for agriculture and food exports Regulated atmosphere storage for prepared commodities Biodegradable food packaging with barrier properties and enhanced strength. DOST also invests in nanosensors which are very promising products of Nanotechnology. ENERGY Solar energy devices that use nanostructures are being pursued through collaborative approach by research groups form the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, and De La Salle University. MEDICINE Many experts believe that nanotechnology can be integrated in medicine for early detection and prevention, improved diagnostics, treatment, and follow-ups on diseases. The development of ex vivo and in vitro diagnostic The development of the whole-animal multimode imaging and clinical trials of synthesized nanodrugs from ethnobiology. ENVIRONMENT Water purification by nanofilters Environmental remediation Development of green composites including forest products Nanoparticles are explored to remove pollutants and toxic products present in soil or water. PRODUCTS OF NANOTECHNOLOGY IN THE PHILIPPINES Nanosilica-based fertilizer that promotes the germination and growth rate of tomatoes Fruitect coating technology which improves the shelf life of premium fruits primarily mango and papaya Nano-encapsulated plant growth regulators that promote germination and development of the roots of high value plants such as coffee, cassava and banana Biosensor kit called PhilGeneStrips water treatment system called Portable Ceramic Water Filter (Pitcher Type).
