Grooming and Bath **Grooming and Bathing** Grooming is essential for patient cleanliness and wellbeing. It includes regular care like brushing, bathing, and clipping. Animals may not groom themselves if stressed or unwell. Some species, like chinchillas, need special grooming, such as sand baths. **Why Groom and Bathe?** **CHAIRS**: Cleanliness, Health, Appearance, Inspection, Relationships, Showing. Grooming helps keep animals clean, stimulates their mind, and aids in physical assessments. Bathing can treat skin conditions and should be done 24-48 hours before surgery to avoid disrupting skin flora. **Coat Types and Grooming Needs** Animals have different coat types that affect grooming requirements: **Smooth coat**: Easy to maintain, minimal care needed. **Wire coat**: Requires hand-stripping or clipping. **Double coat**: Needs trimming and regular grooming. **Silky coat**: Requires regular trimming. **Woolly coat**: Needs special trimming and care. **Corded coat**: Needs regular cleaning and maintenance. **Grooming Tips for Owners** Start grooming early with short sessions.
