WANTS Are described as the goods and services that an individual would want to have as a part of his caprices. UTILITY VS. UTILITY SIGNIFICANCE Is concerned with how things serve a practical purpose. SIGNIFICANCE Is concerned with the meaning assigned to the object. EFFECTS OF MATERIAL POSSESSIONS Possessions can be used as STATUS and SYMBOLS. WHAT IS THE ECONOMIC SELF? You as a part of the consumerism process. The one that purchases goods and avails services. Economic self-su ffi ciency Is the ability of individuals and families to maintain income to consistently meet their needs. MATERIALISM VS. MATERIALISM CONSUMERISM Is a form of philosphical belief that holds that matter is a fundamental substance in nature, and that all things including mental states and consciousness are results of MATERIAL INTERACTIONS. CONSUMERISM State that increasing consumption of goods is economically desirable. "I shop therefore I am, I have therefore I am" Materialism refers to characteristics in an individual, while Consumerism describes a society as a whole.
