# ABU DHABI INDIAN SCHOOL BRANCH 1 AL WATHBA ## TOPIC: OUR PLANET (NEXT SEMESTER BOOK B) ### New Words: 1. solar system 2. Mercury 3. Venus 4. Mars 5. Jupiter 6. Saturn 7. Uranus 8. Neptune 9. asteroids 10. meteoroids 11. gibbous 12. crescent ### Fill in the blanks: 1. The Asteroid belt is found between Mars and Jupiter. 2. Neil Armstrong was the first person to set foot on the moon. 3. Venus is also known as a morning and evening star. 4. Earth is also known as the blue planet. 5. Hazza Al Mansouri is the first astronaut to go to space from the UAE. 6. A mountain top is called a peak. 7. River is a source of freshwater. 8. The water of the sea and ocean is salty and is unfit to drink. ### Facts: #### Planet: 1. Mercury: It is the smallest planet in our solar system and the closest planet to the sun. 2. Venus: The nearest Planet to Earth It is sometimes called the morning or evening star. 3. Earth: Earth is the only planet known to support life and is often referred to as the Blue Planet. 4. Mars: It is called the Red Planet because it is covered in reddish-brown rocks and soil. 5. Jupiter: It is the largest planet in the solar system, but it spins very quickly on its axis. It is so big that you could fit all the other planets in the solar system inside it. 6. Saturn: It is the second biggest planet, but it's also the lightest planet. If there was a bathtub big enough to hold Saturn, it would float in the water! 7. Uranus: The only planet in the solar system that rotates on its side. 8. Neptune: The Farthest Planet from the Sun. #### The Moon: 1. The Moon is the only natural satellite of Earth. 2. The Moon revolves around the Earth. 3. The Moon does not generate any light itself; it just reflects the light of the Sun. 4. Moon Phases: As the Moon moves around the Earth, the part of it lit by the Sun that we can see changes. This makes the Moon look like it has different shapes, which we call the phases of the Moon. ### Answer the following: 1. What is a Solar System? The solar system is made up of the sun and everything that orbits around it, including asteroids, comets, meteoroids, planets, and moons. 2. What is an orbit? The path of one object as it revolves around another object. 3. What is an Axis? Axis is an invisible line around which an object rotates or spins. 4. What is rotation? The spinning of an object on its own axis is called rotation. Earth's rotation causes day and night. 5. What is revolution? The movement of one object around another object. ### HOTS: 1. TIM has a habit of wearing his favorite CAP and socks at different times of a year. - Each time Earth makes one movement around the Sun Tim wears his favorite CAP - Each time Earth completes one spin on its axis, he wears his favorite pair of striped socks. How many times would he wear his CAP and striped socks in a year. 2. What would happen to planets without the Sun? The Sun gives us light and heat. Plants, animals, and people would not be able to live without the Sun. The planets might float away because the Sun's gravity keeps them in place. The planets would become very cold and dark.
