Government Unit 1 Vocabulary Territory - land that is under the control of a particular country or political leader State - A nation or territory that is under the control of one government. Sovereignty - The authority of a state to govern itself Democracy - A form of government on which the people as a whole have the authority to deliberate and decide legislation, or choose representatives to do this for them. Republic - A form of government in which power is held by the people and their elected representatives. Autocracy - A government that is ruled by one person with absolute power. Monarchy - a form of government that has a single person known as a monarch as the leader Oligarchy - A government ruled by a small group of people, such as military leaders or the wealthy/aristocracy. Dictatorship - A government led by a dictator, or someone who holds absolute power over all parts of the state, including politics, economy, culture, education, etc. Theory - a formal set of ideas that is intended to explain why something happens or exists Parliament - the group of people (in some countries) who are elected to make and change the laws of a country Revolution - an attempt, by a large number of people, to change the government of a country, especially by violent action
