PURPOSE: To identify proper procedures when activating a "MAY-DAY", and to identify roles and responsibilities of the Incident Commander, on-scene fire personnel, and Communications Center. SCOPE: Applies to all Fire Department personnel. GUIDELINES: The radio message "MAY-DAY" will be used by a lost, trapped, or injured firefighter, or any fire personnel reporting the knowledge of a lost, trapped, or injured firefighter. A "MAY-DAY" transmission will also be used when a firefighter is experiencing a malfunctioning SCBA when operating within a hazardous atmosphere. Any report of a "MAY-DAY" will receive priority radio traffic followed by an emergency tone. The term "MAY-DAY" will be reserved ONLY to report a lost, trapped, or injured firefighter, or a malfunctioning SCBA. APPLICATION Special Note: One critical component of "MAY-DAY" activation must take place: *When you become lost, activate a "MAY-DAY" as soon as possible.* Early activation allows rescuers additional time to successfully find a lost, trapped, or injured firefighter. If you become lost, it is not a sign of weakness to activate a "MAY-DAY"; it is a sign of intelligence. The following are several indications for when a firefighter should activate a "MAY-DAY". Always remember, "MAY-DAY" activation can never be predetermined as all fires and emergency incidents are very unique. When you feel that you or anyone else is in danger, "MAY-DAY" activation must be called. - - - - - All non-essential radio traffic, regardless of channel, will be curtailed for the direction of the emergency.
