THE IMPORTANCE OF CHLOROPHYLL & Group 1 Athan Cortado OTHER Gab Moreno Sean Kirk Dacillo PIGMENTS Rheeyan Santos Jean Gray Barba Gwenne Ivy Cuate OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand Chlorophyll and Pigments. 2. Role of Chlorophyll in Photosynthesis. 3. Benefits of Chlorophyll in Human WHAT IS CHLOROPHYLL? CHLOROPHYLL is a molecule produced by plants, algae and cyanobacteria which aids in the conversion of light energy into chemical bonds. - is known as a pigment, or molecule that reflects some wavelengths of light, while absorbing others. - Pigments produce a variety of colors in the plant and animal world. - Chlorophyll is a green pigment, and is responsible for the green color of plants and algea. - Chlorophyll is one of the main pigments needed by the plants to manufacture their own food. - There are two major types of chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. Other than chlorophyll, there is also another pigment important for photosynthesis. This is known as the carotenoids. WHY IS CHLOROPHYLL IMPORTANT? IMPORTANCE OF CHLOROPHYLL 1. Energy Production: Vital for sustaining plant life and ecosystems. 2. Oxygen Production: Contributes to the Earth's oxygen supply. 3. Food Source: Base of the food chain for herbivores and, subsequently, carnivores. TYPES OF CHLOROPHYLL 1. Chlorophyll a (found in all plants and absorbs blue- violet light) 2. Chlorophyll b (found in plants and algae and absorbs blue light) 3. Chlorophyll c (found in algae and other organisms) 4. Chlorophyll d (found in some types of algae) p ROLE OF CHLOROPHYLL IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS 1. Key player in converting sunlight into chemical energy 2. Absorbs light energy in the blue and red wavelengths 3. Facilitates the production of glucose and oxygen. PHOTOSYNTHESIS Chlorophyll absorbs the energy from the sun, combining it with carbon dioxide and water to create oxygen. This process transforms raw materials into sugar or glucose. Glucose is food for the plant. Another by- product of photosynthesis is the synthesis of oxygen. SUNLIGHT Sunlight serves as the primary source of energy for plants. WATER Plants need water to mix with the carbon dioxide and sunlight. CHLOROPHYLL Chlorophyll captures the sunlight and helps turn it into food. CARBON DIOXIDE Plants require carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. OTHER PIGMENTS IN PLANTS 1.Carotenoids Orange/ yellow pigments (e.g., beta-carotene). 2. Xanthophyll’s Yellow pigments that protect plants from UV light. 3. Anthocyanins Red, purple, and blue colors in many fruits and flowers 4. Lycopene – responsible for the red color of tomatoes BENEFITS OF CHLOROPHYL TO THE BODY PHYSICAL HEALTH BENEFITS: - Increases oxygen delivery to cells. - Promotes gut health and digestion. - Removes toxins and heavy metals. - Reduces inflammation and pain. - Enhances immune function. SKIN AND HAIR BENEFITS: - Fights bacteria and inflammation. - Hydrates and nourishes skin. - Stimulate hair growth and strength. - Accelerates wound recovery. ORAL HEALTH BENEFITS: - Reduces bad breath and gum inflammation. - Prevents gum disease. MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS: - May reduce cancer risk. - Protects against age-related macular degeneration. - Lowers LDL cholesterol. - Promotes calcium absorption.
