STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINE VALUABLES AT THE SCENE Date Issued: March 29, 2019 Rescinds: December 1, 2008 Section: Incident and Emergency Operations File Code: G-VALU PURPOSE To provide all Toronto Fire Services personnel with a guideline for handling valuables at an incident scene RESPONSIBILITY All personnel are responsible for responsible handling of valuables at any incident. Company Officers are responsible for ensuring Police are requested to any incident at which the security of valuables is required or in question. GUIDELINES 1. Valuables at the scene of any incident shall be the responsibility of Police. 2. Valuable possessions found at any incident that could be jeopardized due to lack of secure circumstances, shall be immediately brought to the attention of a Company Officer. 3. Company Officers are responsible for requesting Police to all incidents at which valuables are found. 4. Company Officers are responsible for securing valuables at any scene until the arrival of Police. 5. Police shall be immediately notified of and surrendered all valuables from an incident. 6. When surrendering valuables to a Police Officer at the scene, Company Officers shall ensure the following: a) The transfer is witnessed by another TFS member. b) Itemized list is compiled of the items surrendered. c) Name/Badge Number of Officer is acquired. 7. Any items that could be potentially considered evidence of a crime scene should not be tampered with, disrupted or moved at any time. Police shall be requested and notified immediately. 8. All actions shall be reported by the TFS Officer in the narrative of the Incident Report.
