Public Relation Translation Chapter4 What is Self-Promotion? – Self-promotion, or self -advertising, is when an individual tells or shows others their accomplishments, skills, and talents. It is a way that the individual gains supporters, gets a promotion, or gains sales. – self-promotion is as advertising oneself as capable and accomplished at whatever skill one wishes to present. – The importance of self-promotion is : – to allow others to acknowledge and understand the capabilities and achievements of the individual. Who better than the individual to relay all that one has achieved? – Self-promotion encourages people to accept the expertise and experiences of the promoter. How Do People Self-Promote?  People self-promote in many ways. – Self-promoting may be done: – Face-to-face by speaking with an individual or group – Via social media, such as a blog, YouTube video or others – Through written materials, such as CVs, flyers, letters, business cards Self-promotion – In this course we are going to study the following : – 4.1 CVs – 4.2 Job application letters – 4.3 Personal websites with a promotional purpose Why may people need self promotion translators or translation? – People may seek a job abroad, and require a professional translator’s services if they recognize the importance of a well-written CV and cover letter. – Moreover, professionals who use the world wide web or social media to make connections with their prospective clients or customers may need a multilingual website or account because they operate in a multilingual area, or they may be seeking to expand their market internationally by having their websites or social network page (or individual posts) translated into foreign languages. 4.1 CVs – Curricula vitae are highly formal and standardized texts. – Different conventions for CV writing exist in different countries; within the European Union, to reach formal equivalence and thus grant better understanding of the skills and abilities of applicants coming from different member states, the Europass CV model (https://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/documents/curriculum- vitae) is currently used. It is a template, written in all the languages of the Union, which caters for the needs of those who apply for a job in both the public and private sector across the EU, both in their own country and abroad. – For translating CVs, suggesting the Europass template for the relevant target language may be a good idea. Two types of CV  There are two main types of CV. – Skills-focused CV – useful for career changers, school leavers or people with gaps in work history. – Work-focused CV – useful for showcasing work experience and for people progressing to the next stage in their career. What to put in your CV – A CV must include: – Personal information: your name and contact details first and last name (this should be in large and bold text),postal address, including area code, phone number , email address – technical and personal skills – work, and community and volunteer experience – qualifications and education – referees (you can include referees or note that referees are available on request). – Achievements – A CV could also include: – an objective and personal statement: An objective gives brief details about the type of work and role you would like and the industry you want to work in. – A personal statement gives the employer an idea of who you are in three or four sentences To make your CV look good: – use a black, easy-to-read font in one size – use short sentences and break up blocks of text – use bullet points to list information – keep the tone formal – avoid abbreviations, slang or jargon – avoid photos or images – have strong headings and lots of white space – keep your CV to two pages. – Generally speaking, when writing or translating a CV, typography and layout play an essential role (Schopp 2002, 2008). Even if CVs are usually seen as a kind of text where the information conveyed is more important than the style of the language that conveys it, the very existence of rather strict semiotic and linguistic conventions for CVs bears witness to the contrary. Examples 4.2 Job application letters – Job application letters have the same source, target, and context of distribution as CVs. – Usually, they actually accompany curricula vitae, in which case they may be termed cover letters. In the e-mail era, cover letters may be included in the text of the message, whereas the CV would normally be attached as a separate file. This can have an impact on the length of the cover letter, as emailed letters are usually shorter than hard copies sent via surface mail. – Like CVs, job application letters are formal texts that follow culture- and language-specific conventions. It is therefore advisable that in translating such texts attention not be paid only to rendering the factual information which makes up most of the letter (and makes it a high information, low persuasion kind of text in comparison with other promotional genres, see table 3.1), but also to the functional equivalence of the target text as a persuasive piece of writing. – Tips for writing a cover letter – When writing your cover letter, remember to: – write a new one for every job you apply for and make sure it’s tailored to the company and the specific role – use the same font and size as you do for your CV, so it looks consistent – make sure the company name and recruiter’s details are correct – use the right language and tone: keep it professional and match the keywords used by the employer in their job advert – show you’ve done your research into the job and the company – highlight your most relevant skills and experience to stand out from other applicants – back up any statements you make with facts – double check spelling and grammar before you send it – keep a copy of your cover letter as they may ask you about it in an interview Example – Dear Ms. White: Prof. John Doe, a consultant to your firm and my Marketing professor, has informed me that Health & Safety Corp. is looking for someone with excellent communication skills and leadership background to train for a management position. I believe that my resume, attached here, will demonstrate that my characteristics match such requirements. In addition, I should like to mention how my recent work experience makes me a par-ticularly strong candidate for the position. As a promoter for Fireproof Textiles at the 2017 Birmingham (UK) Safety & Health Expo, I discussed Fireproof Textiles’ products with mar-keting and sales personnel from all over the world. I also researched and wrote reports on the development of new products and compiled infor-mation on safety apparel trends. The knowledge of the health and safety industry I gained from this position would help me analyze how H&S products can meet the needs of regular and prospective customers, and the valuable experience I gained in promotion, sales, and marketing would help me use that information effectively. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss my qualifications with you. If you are interested, please contact me at (lll) 222–3333 or by e-mail at margegreen@ server.com. I look forward to meeting with you to discuss the ways my skills may best serve Health & Safety Corp. This largely depends on the kind of services or products offered by the professional in question, and sometimes the website is intended for both categories of targets. – It is important for the translator to define the target together with the client, as it may be difficult to infer information from the kind of text one is dealing with. Knowing the target and the kind of relationship our client wishes to establish with them is important not only because it helps us make choices about the degree of formality and detachment vs. friendly, emotional language that we can use. – It is also important to assess the extent to which the target knows the kind of services or products offered by our client, that is to say, whether the target does, or does not, work in the same field as our commissioner – The main object of promotion is the producer or provider, not the product or the service, it is likely that at least the ‘About me’ page of the website will share some of the information content of CVs or application letters, that is to say, the professional’s education and work career. – The style in which it is conveyed, however, changes substantially depending on whether the main target is expected to appreciate a truly CV- style detailed list (which is thought to provide an impression of professionalism) or a more narrative account. Example – I Help Patients Navigate The Complex American Health Care System – ABOUT – How can the American healthcare system take better care of its citizens while spending less money? – Ripped Off! is your guide to better understanding the problems of the American healthcare system—and what you can do for yourself and how to help enact change. – Gilbert Simon, MD, has been a primary care physician for over 50 years.
