THE CENTRAL PLACE OF THE GOSPELS The word Gospel literally means “good news.” The four Gospels differ from one another. Together they announce the Good News in harmony and without error. 1 THE WRITTEN GOSPELS The Holy Spirit guided the Gospel writers. The writings synthesized what the original witnesses had shared. The goal was to preserve and hand on the Good News for future generations. 2 SIMILARITIES OF THE GOSPEL 1. There is only one Gospel and that is the gospel of Jesus Christ. 2. The Synoptic Writers have the almost the same content, style and order of presentation of the life and deeds of Jesus Christ 3. The 4th Gospel (John) has an independent line of Tradition. 3 THE SYNOPTIC The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, GOSPEL and Luke are similar in style and share much of the same content. They present slightly different images of Jesus that were meaningful to the members of their intended communities. 4 The Gospel of John was written much later than the synoptic Gospels. It uses symbolic language to express that Jesus is the Son of God and Incarnate Word.
