Inclusive education works on improving and making the system flexible and not trying to change the learners to fit in the educational system. Inclusive education is transformative rather than just being alternative (Toh, 2018) and it equates to the idea of equity. ![](media/image2.png) **Equality -** everyone is given the same support with the assumption that once everyone is provided with the same opportunities, everyone is catered properly. **Equity -** fairness in every situation. In making education inclusive, teachers use both accommodation and modification strategies in teaching. Accommodations change how learners with disabilities, giftedness, and talents learn the same material and meet the same expectations as their age peers. Modification changes what a student is taught or expected to learn. ![](media/image4.png) Medical Model of Disability presents a traditional view of looking at persons with disabilities (PWDs) as the problem that needs fixing. Social Model of Disability is seen to be caused by the barriers in society. **Medical and Social Model of Disability** ![](media/image6.png) **Biopsychosocial Model of Disability** - refers to the difficulties encountered in three connected areas -- impairments, activity limitations and participation restriction. Impairments are problems in body function or alterations in body structure. Activity limitations are difficulties in executing activities. Participation restrictions are defined as problems with involvement in any area of life. Disability therefore arises from the interaction of health conditions with contextual factors such as environmental and personal factors. Environmental factors can either be facilitators or barriers such as: products and technology; the natural and built-in environment; support and relationships; attitudes; and services, systems and policies. Personal factors, on the other hand, can influence the participation of a person in the society, such as motivation and self-esteem. Activity \# 3 - Prelim **Discuss the following guide question.** How would the situation be addressed under the Medical Model of Disability? How would the situation be addressed under the Social Model of Disability? Which model do you think provides a more empowering approach to disability? Why?
