5 MAKING THE DECISION: CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SIN What are the four points one must show an unbeliever when he makes his decision to trust Christ? 1. 2. 3. 4. CHRIST DIED TO PAY THE PRICE FOR MY SIN What verses can I use? Write and memorize the following verses. Trust God to lead you touse the right ones when witnessing. Romans 5:8 1Peter 3:18 1Peter 2:24 Hebrews 9:28, 42 Isaiah 53:6 Note: Verses 4 and 5 are also helpful. Explain those verses. Im not sure I understand them. Romans 5:8 tells us that God commended, or demon strated, His love for us. How? Thisverse is helpful as a transition verse from point two to point three. After showing the person that he has sinned and must therefore go to hell for that sin, you can say, "God loves you and doesn't want you to die and suffer in hell, but He had to punish your sin." Whydoes God have to punish sin? God is just and righteous. If He let our sin go unpunished, He would not be a fair judge. For example, suppose you committed a terrible crimeand the judge said, "Well, since you have only robbed five banks and killed three people before this,I'l let you go if you promise not to do it again." Would that be justice? Of Course not. So God cannot be just and at the same time let us get away with our sin? 43 our sin, That's correct. But if He is just and punishes our then His love is grieved. He must punish our sin, but He loves us and do want usspending eternity in hell. How does God solve this? CHRIST CAME AS MY SUBSTITUTE The answer is the cross of Christ. He came as our substit.t. Note the verses in Scripture alabout Christ dying for in our place. us--that is, Asubstitute is one who takes sormeone's place, and Christ took our place on the cross. Right. Note the five verses used in this chapter and record the way substitution is seen in each verse: 1. Romans 5:8 2. 1 Peter 3:18 3. 1 Peter 2:24 4. Hebrews 9:28 5. Isaiah 53:6 Think of a good illustration for substitution that you might use at this point in witnessing. Write the gen eral idea of the illustration in the blanks. 44 I've heard that Christ's death was an accident. What if Christ didn't know He was going to die? To answer this question, read the following verses and state how they refute the theory of accidental death. 1. Psalm 22:1-17 (written about 1000BC) 2. Isaiah 53:4 (written about 700 BC) 3. Matthew 16:21 (note who is speaking) 4. Matthew 26:1-2 Complete This Section Without Looking Back at the Lesson 1. Name the four points a sinner needs to realize when making thedecision to trust Christ--in order. 45 2. What five verses state that Christ died for our sin? 3. Why did God have to punish your sin? 4. How can God punish our sin and at the same time sat isfy His love for us? 5. In what way is Christ a substitute? Verses to Memorize Romans 5:8 1Peter 3:18 1Peter 2:24 Hebrews 9:28 Isaiah 53:61 46
