# SECTION 1 | THEMATIC PATHS ## Women in Ancient and Medieval Societies - **Ancient Rome**: Women could own land, run businesses, free slaves, make wills, inherit wealth, and get a paid job but were not citizens, enjoyed more freedom than women in Ancient Greece - **Middle Ages**: The majority of people worked the land. Women were just as active as men in agriculture. Noblewomen and nuns had access to books, were literate, and carried out domestic tasks. Education for both men and women was limited to the upper classes and clergy. Most people lived in small rural communities and were peasants. Peasant women had many domestic responsibilities, including caring for children, preparing food, and tending livestock. During harvest times, women often joined their husbands in the field. - **Renaissance**: Women played different roles depending on their age and marital status, first as a daughter, then as a wife, mother, and finally a widow. Men's roles were generally defined by their social position or occupation. Upper-class women had a share in the family estate.
