FACIAL ANIMATION Graphic Animation MMD2205 Facial Animation The face is a small part of a human, but it plays an essential role in the communication. People look at faces for clues to emotions or even to read lips. The human face is a very irregular structure, which varies from person to person. Scientists have now identified NINE distinct face shapes…five new groups on top of the traditional oval, round, heart and square Dr Kendra Schmid, a leading facial recognition scientist Facial Animation Lip and mouth shapes don't correspond to individual sounds, but are context-dependent. These are further affected by the emotions of the speaker and by the language being spoken. Many different parts of the face and head work together to convey meaning. The complexity of facial models leads to what is commonly called facial expressions. Facial Animation Fred Parke created the first 3D parametric model of a human face. The model is discussed in his 1974 dissertation. A parametric model for human faces Frederic Parke, 1974 Ph.D. dissertation, Utah The facial geometry is broken into parts and controlled by parameters - for example, the rotation of the jaw or the direction of an eyeʼs gaze. Facial Animation Facial Animation In their 1981 SIGGRAPH paper, Platt and Badler describe how to construct expressions using a muscle-based facial model. Animating Facial Expressions Platt and Badler, SIGGRAPH 1981 This work used the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a model from psychology, to determine which muscles to activate in the underlying model. Muscles of the Face Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation The properties of these facial expressions have been studied for 25 years by Psychologist Ekman, who proposed a parameterization of muscles with their relationships to emotions: the Facial Action Coding System (FACS). Facial Action Coding System Ekman and Friesen, 1978 (The system has subsequently been revised several times.) Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Facial Animation Tutorial 1. Explain what is Facial Action Coding System (FACS)? 2. Identify any 2 (TWO) basic face emotion expressions. 3. Identify any 2 research articles related Facial Animation. Summarize each of the article's max to 300 words. ◦ Upload your work in doc. file with articles attaché.
