An economic concept referred to as ‘creative destruction’ describes a process in which new innovations replace and make obsolete older innovations. Progress is the relentless creation of new companies and companies having a lifespan and then being replaced by another generation of companies. 13 How it works In a market economy (most nations currently have this), resources are allocated based on supply and demand – this is what sets prices. The notion of ‘fair’ does not really exist because prices are determined by the market. There is legislation that tries to ensure that we have an efficient market. - Governments want to ensure that competition exists in the market. - Sometimes governments will block mergers or business activity that are deemed to not be in the best interest of consumers. Laws are needed that help uphold contracts and transactions. Enforcement of international rules and regulations. Without this, international trade would slow/stop. 14 Business History History is important in business, as it has a way of predicting/repeating itself. eg business cycles, weather cycles, lessons learned Organizations have a great deal of inertia and there are difficulties in making change. Knowing the history and reasons why for what the organization is focusing on is useful. Most recently we saw a great deal of change coming quickly because of the covid pandemic. Everyone had to adapt and absorb a great deal of information in a short time. 15 Business Progress Early ‘business’ consisted of the trades/piecemeal production that happened in people’s homes. Subsistence production → people produced enough to feed themselves. Specialization and industrialization led to massive increases in production in the 1830’s-1850’s. A period in Europe known as the industrial revolution. 16 Why is this important ? The companies that you work for will be operating under a set of assumptions that it is important to know. You will work within the hierarchy of a company and within the constraints that exist. The resources you need to manage as a project manager – are living certain under constraints. You as a PM have to work with the many different areas and organizational layers of a company. 17 Summary Understanding the organizational structure helps the PM know who they are ‘working’ for. Why the project is important to the organization? Who is going to help lead the project with the PM? How does the project team come together? Why do we do projects ? 18 Next week Virtual class – Zoom details provided via the announcements section day or so before class Be prepared to be on camera we will be doing some group work. After class activity: Create a working agreement to review next week in class. You will likely need to look up what a working agreement is and then outline some things you want included on that. We will agree as group on what is in that agreement. 19 Assignment #1 - due Wed Sept 11th, 2024 Provide a summary of yourself, who you are, why did you sign up for this program? What is your goal?
