A Harry Sperl FINAL EXAM 16 Feb 2022 Name: _______________ Lengua Inglesa II Condición: _________________ Harry Sperl, also known as Hamburger Harry, has spent over 25 years collecting hamburger-related items. His collection started by accident when one of his friends noticed a couple of burger-related items in his house and asked if he was collecting them. After thinking about the question, he decided it was a good idea. In fact, he has been so successful that he achieved the world record for this in 2014 for burger related objects. Since then his collection has more than doubled in size, and now he has a part of his house which people can visit, named the International Hamburger Hall of Fame dedicated to showing off his collection which includes a burger Viking helmet, a burger water bed, and a burger motorbike! B John Reznikoff Although we might all like to have something to remember a famous celebrity, for example an autograph or framed photo, John Reznikoff takes that a few steps further. He has one of the world’s largest collections of human hair samples, including the hair of Abraham Lincoln amongst his collection. Hair collecting is a longstanding hobby, dating as far back as the 1800s. Although it may seem quite a strange hobby these days, collecting famous hair samples is a lucrative business. Some of Che Guevara’s hair recently sold for over $100,000 so who knows what someone might pay for Abraham Lincoln’s hair. Reznikoff, however, doesn’t offer his collection for sale to the public. While he does work in selling collectables, he keeps his special collection of hair samples to himself. C Lisa Courtney Lisa has one the world’s largest collections of Pokémon characters, all in different shapes and sizes. She has won a world record, with over 16,000 in her collection. She goes to great efforts to collect them, too. Not only does she spend time looking for new merchandise online, she also occasionally travels from her home in the UK to Japan, so she can buy more specialist toys. She began collecting the toys when she was only nine years old when she was being badly treated by her classmates. The toys gave her so much joy that she has continued collecting into her adulthood. The toys have completely taken over her mother’s house where Lisa lives. In fact, her mother has had to move out of the main bedroom to make more room for the Pokémon collection! D Percival Lugue We’ve all been to a fast food restaurant and received a free small toy with our meal, and sometimes these just get left behind, but not for Percival Lugue. He collects these items and has amassed so many that he achieved the world record for the number of restaurant toys, with over 10,000. He’s not slowing down though and hopes to one day own all the fast food toys that have ever been produced. He even blogs about what toys he has recently collected and shows photographs of them. His start in collecting didn’t come easily. Growing up in a town in the Philippines, there were no fast food restaurants in town and he had to travel 40 miles to collect the toys. E Lily Connors Even though she is still a child, Lily Connors is a record breaker with her collection of over 6,600 items of Dr Who memorabilia. It might seem unusual for a young girl to be obsessed with a sci-fi show, but Lily has loved it ever since she was three years old. When she started collecting items from the show, her parents soon started helping her and now every Christmas and birthday present she receives is something connected to Dr Who. Her bedroom is covered with items about the show and she even has a Dr Who wardrobe. Not only does she have an impressive collection of Dr Who merchandise, she has also been to see the show filmed, met the stars and attended conventions all over the UK.
