**Exam Review 2024/2025** **Terms to know** ***Irony-*** Where there's a contrast between reality and expectations ***Denouement-*** The ending of a story. Usually directly after the climax. The point where all conflicts have been resolved. ***Cliffhanger-*** Ending a section of a story with a feeling of suspense or with a big dramatic question ***backstory-*** Often employed to lend depth or make the main story believable ***Setting-*** Setting gives readers the main backdrop and mood for a story ***connotation-*** Cultural understanding of a word ***Allusion-*** When an author references another form of media in their story ***Pun-*** A play on words that can give multiple meanings of a term for a humorous effect ***Alliteration***- When two or more words have the same stressed consonant sound ***inciting force-*** The event(s) that cause the main story to take action. Whatever pushes the protagonist's life into chaos, causing the story to unravel ***conflict-*** Struggle between two opposing sides in a story or a conflict within the protagonist ***ambiguity-*** Instances where a sentence in a story can be interpreted in multiple different ways ***dramatic irony-*** A form of irony in which the readers know more than the actual characters in the story do so some actions can have different meanings to the characters versus the readers ***verbal irony-*** Using words to convey a meaning that is contrasting to its literal meaning ***situational irony-*** When the opposite of what is expected to happen actually happens. ***foreshadowing-*** When an author drops hints as to what will happen later in the story ***antagonist-*** A person who creates obstacles or opposes the protagonist of the story. In many cases, the antagonist represents the opposite traits of the protagonist (foil) ***context-*** Setting within which the story takes place. Context provides clarity and meaning for the intended message ***pacing-*** Refers to how fast or slow the story is moving. Usually seen with or without pauses (periods or commas) ***simile-*** Figure of speech that makes a comparison between two different things using like or as ***metaphor-*** Same thing as simile but without like or as ***setting-*** Initiates the main backdrop and mood of a story ***atmosphere-*** How the environment feels to the reader.
