# Evolution ## Biological Evolution - Change in a population's inherited traits over generations ## Population - Multiple organisms of the same species. - Still have variety (different traits) - Coded by genes - Variety of traits in population = variety in gene population ## Gene Flow - Genes that move between populations - Can happen during migration - Can impact genetic makeup of population. ### Mutations - Could be harmful, beneficial or neutral - A way of changing the genetic material that can change the population ## Genetic Drift - Change in genetic makeup of a population due to random events. - Gene pool of the remaining population doesn't represent the original population gene pool - Thus impacting genetic makeup ## Natural Selection - The population that is more adapted to the environment are more likely to survive. - Pass genes on that contribute to successful adaptation - Organisms that die off have less options for reproduction - Higher biological fitness ## Evolutionary Evidence ## Homology - Similarity due to common ancestors - Molecular evidence: supports that certain animals are more related to each other due to common DNA ## Anatomical Structures **Homologous Structures** - Similarities in the general arrangement and pieces that make up structures. - Inherited from a common ancestor, but have the same function. - Don't mean that they are related, (ex: bird wings and butterfly wings).
