Everything you need to know about Singtel Symmetrical Broadband 1. How does our XGS-PON Symmetric Broadband Work? All 3Gbps-10Gbps plans come issued with an XGS-PON Optical Network Router (ONR) that enables symmetrical broadband. Symmetric broadband allows for upload and download speeds to be the same, up to a maximum of up to 10Gbps on our new XGS-PON ONR (depending on what plan you sign-up for). What you can say: Singtel’s 3Gbps to 10Gbps plans come with a special router called XGS-PON ONR. In the past, fibre plans would have different upload and download speeds. This router gives you equal upload and download speeds, up to 10Gbps depending on your plan. This is useful for activities like video conferencing and uploading large files when working from home as well as online gaming. 2. Can I really get up to 10Gbps speeds as advertised? Advertised speeds are maximum speeds that can be achieved under perfect conditions (e.g. no network congestion, minimal interference etc.), which are theoretical maximum speeds for optic fibre technology that we use today. However, the industry standard follows typical speeds. What you can say: The 10Gbps speed is the fastest possible under perfect conditions, like no network traffic or interference. In real life, your speed might be lower due to outside interference such as the material of your walls, placement of router, etc. 3. What are Singtel’s typical broadband speeds? Typical speeds are average speeds which customers typically experience during everyday usage which are more realistic speeds users will see in real-world conditions. The typical download speed range is computed to reflect that at least 90% of the time, a user should experience the lower bound speed or higher. For more information or latest updated typical broadband speeds, visit https://www.singtel.com/personal/support/broadband/typical-download- speeds. What you can say: Typical speeds are the speeds most people get in daily use. These are calculated to ensure you get at least the minimum speed most of the time. Check the latest speeds at the link provided. 4. Why do speeds vary and what kind of factors affect speeds? Wired and WiFi Speeds can vary due to different reasons, including but not limited to: Background applications taking up additional bandwidth, security software and firewalls interrupting network traffic, number of connected devices, website traffic, environmental factors (e.g. brick walls, concrete/ steel reinforced flooring and/or pillars, filled fish tanks, reflective surfaces etc.) What you can say: Your speed can vary because of: Apps using the internet in the background Security software like antivirus slowing things down Too many devices connected (therefore better to upgrade to a higher plan, 3Gbps --> 5Gbps) Physical barriers like walls or floors 5. What is the difference between Wired and WiFi speeds? Wired connectivity usually provides the typical maximum speeds allowed by your internet plan (with the right wiring and ethernet port compatibility). They are usually not affected by external interference. WiFi speeds are usually dependent on the internet plan and the WiFi standard used (e.g. WiFi 5, WiFi 6, WiFi 7), which vary as well based on environmental factors like network traffic, distance and external interferences. For more information, do see our FAQ from our different high-speed plans. What you can say: Wired Speeds: Usually the fastest and most stable because they’re not affected by interference. WiFi Speeds: Depend on your internet plan, WiFi version (e.g., WiFi 5, WiFi 6), distance from the router, and obstacles. What system requirements do I need to maximise wired Symmetric Broadband? End User Macintosh PC Processor Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU, 7- Intel i5-7600 Quad Core 3.5 GHz core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine or CPU System or better better System Memory 16GB RAM minimum 16GB RAM minimum Hard Disk 256GB SSD minimum 256G SSD minimum OS MacOS 13 minimum Windows 11 minimum Cable Cat6/6a cable minimum Cat6/6a cable minimum Required Connection Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet port (10G Base- 10 Gigabit Ethernet port (10G Base- T) network card OR T) PCIe Network Adapter with Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.1 Gen2 port , backward compatibility of 5/2.5/1G with Thunderbolt 3 to 10GbE and 100Mbps; RJ45 port and built- NBASE-T RJ-45 adapter in QoS (Recommended ASUS XG- (Recommended QNAP QNA- C100C) T310G1T) Valid as of November 2024 What you can say: To achieve the maximum wired speeds of up to 10Gbps, these are the system requirements: Apple Computers: o Processor: M1 chip or better o Memory: At least 16GB RAM o OS: macOS 13 or later o Cable: Cat6/6a cable with a 10G Ethernet port or Thunderbolt 3 adapter Windows Computers: o Processor: Intel i5-7600 or better o Memory: At least 16GB RAM o OS: Windows 11 or later o Cable: Cat6/6a cable with a 10G Ethernet port 7. What kind of hardware do I need to maximise my Symmetric Broadband? Additional equipment such as a compatible user devices (including but not limited to handsets, laptops and consoles), ethernet switch(es) (separate charges may apply) and/or wiring installation (if your house is not wired up) may be required to maximise speeds throughout your home to fully enjoy the power of Singtel’s Symmetric Broadband. If you are unsure what is best for your home, book a consultation through our Customer Care or Sales Specialists! How do I optimize my internet speeds? Quit applications running on your computer that are taking up a good chunk of your bandwidth for downloading by: 1. Disable security software such as anti-virus and firewall that are interrupting your network traffic. 2. Limit the number of computers/devices concurrently connected. For best performance, always limit to 1 device when doing your speed test. This is to ensure no other devices are hogging your bandwidth, thus affecting the speed. 3. Use a Wired Connection instead of a wireless connection, as wireless connections are subject to environmental factors. What you can say: Close apps that use a lot of data. Use fewer devices at the same time in the household. Switch to a wired connection if using a computer.
