They listen to others, are tolerant of opposing points of view, and "treat others as ends in themselves and never as means to an end" ii. **Ethical leaders serve others.** They have a calling to serve and engage in servant leadership (Greenleaf, 1977). They selflessly prioritise serving the interests of others and act in ways that will benefit others. They care about the welfare of others, and engage in behaviours such as mentoring, empowering others and team building. iii. **Ethical leaders are just.** They place a high priority on fairness and justice when making decisions, including demonstrating fairness towards individuals as well as the broader community. iv. **Ethical leaders are honest.** They demonstrate honesty and integrity, which helps to build trust, strengthen relationships and enhance their personal power. They are also transparent in their interactions with others, while being diplomatic and sensitive to the needs of others. They also follow through on commitments. v. **Ethical leaders build community.** They are aware of the needs and aspirations of their communities and look to align their leadership activities to help meet community goals. They look beyond the organizational/ business benefits. 4. **Major 10 Characters of Ethical Leadership** An ethical leader is one that always endeavors to make the right decision, no matter it's unpopular or inconvenient. In order to make the right decision, an ethical leader must possess some solid set of values and attributes to rely on when things get tough. An ethical leader therefore needs to; i. **Be the Example** ii. **Champion the Importance of Ethics & Integrity** iii. **Communicate** iv. **Articulate and embody the purpose and values of the organization** v. **Focus on Organizational Success rather than on personal Ego** Ethical leaders understand their place within the larger network of the organization and stakeholders. It is not about the leader as an individual but about something bigger, beyond the individual, thus the goals, vision and dreams of the organization. Ethical leaders realize the importance of focusing on the success of the organization and also recognize that value is in the success of all the people in the organization and not on them as individuals. vi. **Create a living conversation about Ethics, Values, Mission and purpose - Internally and Externally** vii. **Provide solutions to conflicts** viii. **Sound Decision Making** ix. **Time Management** Time management refers to the process of planning and controlling the amount of time spent on a given task. Ethical leaders must implement time management in an effective manner, be well organized and take ownership over the use of this important resource, *'time'*. They must plan daily routine and functions in accordance with time; all jobs and duties (both for oneself and the subordinates) must be carried out in an appropriate manner, ethically and with integrity. x. **Managerial Function** 5. **The 4-V Model of Developing Ethical Leadership skills** i. **Values** Values act as the primary factor within the model. To develop ethical leadership, the leader should begin with understanding their individual core values and then commit to compliment them with the organizational core values i.e *Fairness, Integrity, Service Excellence & Transparency* while *a*ssimilating them into action. ii. **Vision** iii. **Voice** iv. **Virtue** 6. **Summary**
