A BRIEF HISTORY OF COFFEE Coffee is a popular beverage, one of the most popular in the 1 world today. 1 East and West, there are people who cannot start their day without their morning cup of coffee. Where did this drink come from? How long have people enjoyed it? The answers may surprise you. The discovery of coffee can be traced back to sixth century Ethiopia. 5 2 According to one legend, coffee was discovered by Kaldi, a goat herder. One day, while Kaldi was napping, his goats were grazing on a mountain meadow. The animals ate some red berries on shiny green plants. Kaldi woke to find them acting frisky and dancing around the meadow. Boldly, he ate some of the berries himself. Soon, he felt alert and full of energy. Believing it was a miracle, he took the berries 10 ENL1002 (F) / Page 4 of 9 to a nearby monastery. Chadely, the abbot, tried the berries. He realized that they could help the monks stay awake during late-night prayers. The monks began drying the beans and sending them to distant monasteries. The beans were soaked in water to make them soft, and the monks drank the liquid and ate the beans for energy. Sometime before the twelfth century, traders carried coffee from Africa to 15 Arabia. The plants were first grown in Yemen. The drink's popularity then spread 3 into Egypt, Syria, Persia, and Turkey. In 1575, the world's first coffee shop, Kiv Han, opened in Constantinople (Istanbul). Coffee shops became an important part of Middle Eastern life. People visited them to talk, play chess, and listen to music and poetry, just as they do today. Warriors and merchants of the Ottoman Empire helped spread the word about 20 coffee to Europe. In the late seventeenth century, Turkish armies surrounded Vienna, 4 Austria, and unsuccessfully tried to capture the city. After the attack, Franz Kolschitzky, an Austrian officer who had lived in Turkey, found bags of "dried black fodder” that was actually coffee. Kolschitzky opened a café in Vienna in 1683. The Viennese began the custom of sweetening coffee and adding milk. 25 Coffee arrived even earlier in London. The first coffee houses opened in the 1640s. London coffee houses became centers of discussion known as "penny universities." They also were places to do business. Opened in 1668, Edward Lloyd's 5 Coffee Shop attracted insurance agents. It became Lloyd's of London, the world- famous insurance company. Coffee spread to Britain's North American colonies and 30 cafés opened in Boston, Philadelphia, and New York City in the 1690s. By 1700, coffee was more popular than beer as a morning drink in New York City. After the Boston Tea Party of 1773, drinking coffee was an act of patriotism in the colonies. For many centuries, the coffee plant was grown only in the Middle East. Arab coffee merchants carefully guarded their monopoly. There were strict laws against 6 35 exporting coffee plants; only the dried beans could be traded. That changed in 1600. Babi Budan, an Indian merchant, secretly carried fertile plants from Arabia to India and started his own coffee plantation. In 1616, Dutch merchants smuggled cuttings from coffee plants out of Yemen and started coffee plantations in southeast Asia. Coffee growing in Java was so successful that the word java became a synonym for 40 coffee. ENL1002 (F) / Page 5 of 9 7 It was romance that brought coffee to Brazil. The story began in 1783 when the Dutch gave French King Louis XIV a coffee plant. It is believed that 80% of today's coffee plants are descendants of that plant. Cuttings were taken to France's 45 tropical colonies, including French Guiana. In 1827, Brazilian diplomat Francisco Palheta went to French Guiana to negotiate a treaty. While he was there, he developed a relationship with the wife of the French governor. When they said goodbye, she gave him a bouquet of flowers. Hidden among the blossoms were cuttings from a coffee plant. These cuttings were the source of the huge Brazilian 50 coffee industry. 8 In the twentieth century, there were many advances in coffee making and marketing. In 1900, the Hills Brothers Company began vacuum-packing coffee in cans. The next year, Japanese- American scientist Satori Kato of Chicago invented instant coffee. In 1903, Ludwig Roselius introduced a brand of decaffeinated coffee 55 which he named Sanka. In 1938, scientists from the Nestlé Corporation in Switzerland invented freeze-dried coffee. Espresso, a thick, strong coffee made with steam, was introduced by Luigi Bezzara in 1901, and in 1946, Achilles Gaggia invented an easy-to-use espresso machine. In 1971, a coffee shop named Starbucks opened in Pike Place Market in Seattle and created a new market for high-priced 60 espresso drinks. In the 1980s, coffee shops in Korea, Taiwan, and Japan multiplied. They became popular places for young couples and groups to meet. 9 If Kaldi walked into a modern coffee shop he would probably be amazed that the beans that he and his goats discovered almost 1,500 years ago had such an impact on world culture.
