Neoclassical Period The Neoclassical Period (1660-1798) in literature and art was characterized by a return to classical ideals of ancient Greece and Rome. Emphasis on reason, order, and clarity. Valued harmony, restraint, and decorum. Focused on universal truths and common human experiences. Major Authors and Their Works During Neoclassical Period 1. Alexander Pope: Known for "The Rape of the Lock" and "An Essay on Man." 2. Jonathan Swift: Famous for "Gulliver’s Travels." 3. Samuel Johnson: Wrote "A Dictionary of the English Language" and numerous essays. Context Clues - Hints in the text that help you figure out what unfamiliar words mean. Types of Context Clues Definition Clues Ex. Milton was unusually precocious, he showed qualities or abilities of an adult at an early age. Restatement/Synonym Clues Ex. The newspaper, the school, and the theater establishments flourished or prospered. Antonyms/Contrast Ex. Shakespeare was the poet of impulse, while Milton was the poet of steadfast will and purpose. The Romantic Period The Romantic period reacted to the Industrial Revolution, focusing on nature instead of industrialization. It shifted the focus from society and logic to individual feelings and emotions. Although it lasted only 34 years, it produced many remarkable literary works. Selective Authors and Works during Romantic Period William Wordsworth A key Romantic poet who loved nature and expressed deep emotions. He focused on the beauty of nature and everyday life. “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” John Keats Another important Romantic poet known for vivid images and themes of beauty and life’s fleeting nature. First Conditionals - is used to talk about things which are possible in the present or the future — things which may happen.
