Read about the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook as a popular social media and answer the following questions: The Advantages of Facebook for Children A. Digital Competence. Managing a Facebook page teaches a child how to post comments and photos, and how to navigate the Web. Having good online social media skills will be increasingly important as they get older. B. Educational Development. A majority of tweens and teens use social networking to discuss schoolwork. Shared discussions about school assignments are one of the best reasons to allow access to social networks. C. Social Skills. Facebook allows kids to keep up with current friends and make new ones. When used in the right way, social media can increase a child’s self-esteem and help them feel less isolated. The Disadvantages of Facebook for Children A. Facebook is a Gateway to the Whole Internet. Children would become part of one of the Internet’s most expansive personal data-collection and profiling platforms. Not to mention the exposure to a new generation of highly persuasive and manipulative digital marketing practices as well. B. Waste of Time. You could spend hours on the social media site without realizing how much time has gone by. Can you imagine how that would be for a curious young child? C. Introduction to Cyber-bullying. However much you school your child on the right way to behave online, you cannot stop other children from posting mean comments. Many parents are concerned about the negative effects that come with online interaction but disallowing children in joining such social media is easier said than done. In fact, with appropriate guidance and supervision, Facebook can bring a number of advantages for kids. 1. Based on the selection, what could be the best probable informed decision? a. It can make children like me connect to friends, relatives and classmates and be informed on what is happening in the society. Hence, I am in favor of using Facebook. b. It leads to addiction and children could be fooled due to many fake news. That is why I am not in favor of using Facebook. c. With parental guidance, I am in favor of using Facebook because it served as a platform where learners like us connect to one another for educational and social purposes. d. Facebook is a waste of time with limited educational value for my studies; I prefer using Google for research and homework. 2 2. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of using Facebook, what could be your informed decision regarding the use of this social medium? a. I will use Facebook because it provides useful information for my studies, helps me connect with new and old friends, and improves my web navigation skills despite its disadvantages. b. I will stop using Facebook due to its negative effects, such as exposure to strangers, wasting time, and the risk of being bullied by online friends. c. I prefer using other social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram for social interactions and Google for educational purposes. d. I will continue using Facebook for its many advantages, but I will set time limits, be careful about what I post, and only visit sites approved by my parents. 3.
