**End Sem Exam Examples** Two of the biggest, most famous cities in the world are Sao Paulo, Brazil, and New York, New York. They are busy cities with cultural, and historical importance. They are also business centers in their respective countries. They differ from each other in many ways. These cities are on opposite hemispheres and have different languages, food, and cultures. Their climates and economies are also very distinct from one another. With all of these obvious differences, you may be surprised that there are also many similarities that these two large cities share. Both cities have a lot of immigration, attract many tourists, and have a high cost of living. What style of writing is this? 1. Comparison and Contrast 2. Process 3. Descriptive 4. Narrative Answer:1 Jessica Simpson and Ashley Simpson are both the same in the sense that they are both famous singers and even sisters, yet they are quite different in many ways. Jessica was always sure what she wanted to do with her life and worked very hard whereas Ashley enjoyed what life had to offer her at the moment. Jessica was in voice lessons and started to sing Gospel music during her high school career. On the other hand, Ashley took dance classes and learned how to perform Hip-hop music. Jessica is more well-known as the airhead sister. For example, they both did a breathmint commercial together, and it poked fun at Jessica's blond moments by having Ashley point them out. Jessica is more "girly" of the sisters. She loves to wear dresses and high-heels, and has the blond bombshell look, unlike Ashley who has more of a punk style. Jessica Simpson's music has more of a classical pop tone, while Ashley's music has more of a pop-rock ring to it. Both of these girls are hard workers, and both are very successful singers although they are very extraordinary in their own ways. What style of writing is this? 1. Comparison and Contrast 2. Process 3. Descriptive 4. Process Answer:1 Many students leave school because their parents don't have enough money. Also, students drop out due to the absence of school transport; so, they find it difficult to walk for a long distance to arrive at school. In addition, because of some parents' divorce, children no longer feel at ease and they decide to stop schooling. Finally, since life is hard in the countryside, parents prefer to keep their children at home so as to help them with their work. All in all, the absence of school transport, family problems, and poverty are the main causes why many students drop out. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Narrative 4. Process Answer: 2 Anger is having a feeling of hatred toward someone or something. It is one of our basic emotions and can be most dangerous if it is not carefully controlled. A person can become angry when he cannot fulfill some basic need or desire that is important to him. For example, a child may become angry when he cannot play outside with his friends. An adult may become angry when he does not receive a raise in pay that he expected. Mentally, anger can interfere with our thoughts, making it difficult to think clearly. Physically, it may cause violent reactions in the muscles and in the nervous system. This causes an angry person to flush and tremble and to show other signs of disturbance. A person can be dangerous if he is in an angry mood because he can develop feelings of hostility and hatred toward another person, which can then often turn violent. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Definition 4. Process Answer:3 love means trust because when you trust someone, you can talk to him/her about anything. For example, I trust my girlfriend 100%.  It is because I trust her that I know I can tell her anything, and that is why I love her.  Furthermore, I believe that love means friendship because the people you spend time with are your friends, and if you do not love them, then why would you hang out with them?  To illustrate, I love my two best friends because they are like brothers to me.  We are always laughing and protecting each other.  Finally, love means unselfishness because when you love someone and they love you back, there should always be sharing.  For instance, my next-door neighbor's wife never shares anything with her husband, such as food, drinks, possessions, etc.  I sure do not see a whole lot of love there.  For me, love means the above three things. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Definition 4. Process Answer: 3 One of my favorite family experiences was when I went to see Anne Frank's (a Jewish victim of the Nazi persecution during World War II) hideout in Amsterdam, Holland. I had read Anne's published diary when I was younger, so I was extremely thrilled to actually have the chance to see where she and her family hid from the Germans for so many months. I walked up the stairs of an apartment building and into a room with only a bookshelf in it. From what I remembered from reading the diary, there was a doorknob behind the books. I found the doorknob and turned it and there was the secret annex. When I stepped into the room behind the bookshelf, I felt as if I had stepped back into history. I found Anne's room still with pictures of her favorite celebrities on her walls. The Frank family's furniture was still placed where they had left them in the rooms, everything just as described in the diary. I toured each room in awe of actually seeing how they had lived, yet with sadness to know how it all ended. Anne's Diary was no longer just a book to me, but a true heart-felt, emotional life story written by a girl I felt I almost knew. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Definition 4. Narrative Answer: 4 \"My most valuable possession is an old, slightly warped blond guitar―the first instrument I taught myself how to play. It\'s nothing fancy, just a Madeira folk guitar, all scuffed and scratched and fingerprinted. At the top is a bramble of copper-wound strings, each one hooked through the eye of a silver tuning key. The strings are stretched down a long, slim neck, its frets tarnished, the wood worn by years of fingers pressing chords and picking notes.  What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Definition 4. Descriptive Answer:4 To write a good process paragraph, you should pay attention to three important things. First, make sure that the steps in the process are complete. Following a procedure whose steps are incomplete will fail to produce the expected result. Second, present the steps in the right sequence. For example, if you are describing the process of cleaning an electric mixer, it is important to point out that you must first unplug the appliance before you remove the blades. A person could lose a finger if this part of the process were missing. Improperly written instructions have caused serious injuries and even death. (Scarry S. & Scary J., 2011: 415). Finally, use correct transitional words to indicate the sequence of the process you are writing. the following are transitions commonly used in process analysis. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Process 3. Definition 4. Descriptive Answer:2 There are three different types of rock music, alternative rock, classic rock, and hard rock, also known as metal. Alternative rock features a steady bass drum laying down the beat, with easy-flowing guitar riffs over the top. The bass line is a toned town, and the lyrics are sung with intensity and authority. Depending on the song, the guitars can either be acoustic guitars or electric guitars. Classic rock combines a steady-driving bass drum sound, with high snare overtones, steady and often repeating guitar riffs, and an intensive bass line. The guitars are more often than not all electric guitars, and distortion is rarely used. The lyrics are sung with style and enthusiasm. Hard rock, or metal, features a hard rolling bass drum with an abundant amount of cymbal work. This style of rock uses several electric guitars with heavy distortion to bring a very intense sound. A hard, intense, driving bass line rounds out the style. The lyrics aren't really sung so much as screamed. It doesn't matter what your preference is, each different style of rock music is unique on its own. What style of writing is this? 1. Classification 2. Cause and Effect 3. Definition 4. Descriptive Answer :1 Learning how to ride a bike for the first time was a nerve-racking independent moment. I was about five years old when my sister informed me that I was too old to still be riding a bike with training wheels. That was the time I decided not to depend on them anymore. Even though I had some doubts, my sister and I went outside and started to take the little wheels off my bike. After my bike went through the transformation, I was now ready for the big moment I slowly got on the bike, and with my shaky hands, I gripped the handles tightly. Meanwhile, my sister was holding on to me to help keep my balance. I was so afraid that she would let me go, yet I was determined to ride this bike on my own. Next with a little push from her, I started to peddle. The faster my bike went the faster my heart raced. Finally, I looked back nervously and noticed that my sister let go of my bike a long time ago. I was so excited that I accomplished freedom on my bike that I forgot to peddle. The next step I remember, I was lying on the ground, yet I did not care because of the adrenaline rush What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer: 1 \"Once in a long while, four times so far for me, my mother brings out the metal tube that holds her medical diploma. On the tube are gold circles crossed with seven red lines each―\"joy\" ideographs in the abstract. There are also little flowers that look like gears for a gold machine\... When I open it, the smell of China flies out, a thousand-year-old bat flying heavy-headed out of the Chinese caverns where bats are as white as dust, a smell that comes from long ago, far back in the brain.\" What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer: 2 Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend can be easier said than done, but here **are five steps that may** help the breaking-up process. First, try to distance yourself by suddenly becoming busier than usual. The next step is to calmly tell the other person that how you are feeling. Then gently let him or her know that you do not want to be together anymore. Then make sure to be sensitive to his or her feelings and answer any questions that he or she may have. For example, if the person starts to cry, use kind words to help comfort him or her. After everything is said and done, take some alone time for yourself because everyone has feelings to sort out after a breakup. Finally, go out with friends and meet new people. With these five steps, it will make the breaking-up process smooth for both parties What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification 5. Answer: 3 People looking to lose weight have a few options: exercise, diet, weight loss pills, or surgery. Exercising involves going to a gym, working out at home, or joining some sort of class or sports team. Dieting often involves strict management of what one eats in order to lose, gain, or maintain weight. Weight loss pills can help individuals who have difficulty losing weight by reducing appetite, reducing fat absorption, or increasing fat burning. A person can lose weight by combining the pills with other methods such as diet or exercise. Individuals who are severely overweight can talk to a doctor about having surgery to help them lose the weight that they need. What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer: 4 The most embarrassing moment of my sophomore year was when I earned my nickname, Crash. It all started right after school when I turned onto the busiest street by the school. First, I pulled up right behind this truck at a stop sign. After a second, a fellow older student told me that I was really close and that I was going to hit the truck in front of me. At the moment I was trying to tell the kid that I was giving a ride to to get back in the car because he was hanging out the window. Since I was distracted, I thought the long line of traffic had started to move, but it hadn't. In the blink of an eye, I hit the back of the truck in front of me. The devastation sunk in. I was so worried that I damaged the truck, but all that I did was scratch his bumper. Lucky for him! Then it came time to look at my car. My car was ruined. The hood was buckled, the front end was pushed back, and my headlights were broken. Humiliated and scared, I still had to drive my totaled care home. During School that year, I never did hear the end of what had happened that day. What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification My dog\'s fur felt like silk against my skin and her black coloring shone, absorbing the sunlight and reflecting it back like a pure, dark mirror. The sunset filled the sky with a deep red flame, setting the clouds ablaze. The waves rolled along the shore in a graceful, gentle rhythm, as if dancing with the land What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer: 2 Making a good cup of tea is exquisitely simple. First, the teapot is heated by filling it with water that has just come to a boil. This water is then discarded, and one teaspoon of loose tea per cup is placed in the teapot (the exact amount may vary according to taste). Fresh water that has just come to a boil is poured into the pot. A good calculation is six ounces of water for each cup of tea. The tea must now steep for three to five minutes; then it is poured through a strainer into a cup or mug. A pound of loose tea will yield about two hundred cups of brewed tea. Using a tea bag eliminates the strainer, but it is still best to make the tea in a teapot so that the water stays sufficiently hot. The typical restaurant service---a cup of hot water with the tea bag on the side---will not produce the best cup of tea because the water is never hot enough when it reaches the table and because the tea should not be dunked in the water; the water should be poured over the tea. Although tea in a pot often becomes too strong, that problem can be dealt with very easily by adding more boiling water. (From: Scarry S. and Scary J., 2011: 422) What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer: 3 Different students attend various types of schools; they can usually be classified as either public, private religious, private nonreligious, or alternative. The state funds public schools, and the majority of students in the United States attend them. Private schools are schools that do not receive federal funding but are instead supported by a private organization or funding from individuals. Private religious schools are based around a particular faith, such as Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, and so forth. Religion is part of the everyday lives of the students and they also learn about their faith in addition to regular subjects. On the other hand, private nonreligious schools do not receive state funding and have the ability to make their own rules. Alternative schools can be made up of a variety of different categories, such as the Montessori program or technical schools, which are typically self-paced and hands-on. Most students who attend class in a school building go to one of these types of institutions. What Style of writing is this? 1. Narrative 2. Descriptive 3. Process 4. Classification Answer:4
