Electromagnetic waves Waves are a disturbance that transmits energy through empty space and matter. Wavelength:distance from one crest to the next. An electromagnetic wave begins when a changed particle vibrates, causing the electric field around it to vibrate as well. The two types of vibrating fields are electric and magnetic. These fields combine to create an electromagnetic wave. The vibration electric field creates a vibrating magnetic field. Electromagnetic waves are a type of transverse wave.Electromagnetic waves are transverse waves because the electric and magnetic fields that make up the wave are perpendicular to each other Electromagnetic radiation is the transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light. The types of electromagnetic waves are as followed: ○ X rays:Bones and teeth block x rays ○ Visible light:Our eyes detect this light as colors, shortest wavelength is violet.Longest wavelength is red. ○ Radio waves:Converts waves to sound and pictures. ○ UV radiation:The shortest wavelength color is violet ○ Microwave radiation:water molecules absorb microwaves and increase the temperature of food. ○ Gamma rays,Nuclear explosions ○ Infrared radiation:It causes molecules to vibrate. Types of radiation from lowest to highest frequency Radio waves Microwaves Infrared Visible light Ultraviolet X-rays Ultraviolet Gamma ray
