It has been defined as a person who has knowledge, skills, values and special training in teaching. He/she is responsible for providing personal, caring services to students by selecting and using methods and evaluation process in other to promote learning. It's therefore unethical for a teacher who is not into teaching to teach in the classroom. Such person is not teaching but cheating. Teacher can also be described as a sophist, also a loco parentis (when a teacher perform the function of a parent). He/she is a sage on a stage. First teacher of a child is mother. EDUCATION AND TYPES Meaning of Education Education is the mother of all other faculties. It derived its meaning from two Latin words ‘educare’ and ‘educere’ respectively. It's the manifestation of life. Education is preparing a person to face everyday life. Forms/types of Education Education can generally be classified into three dimensions, namely: formal, informal and non-formal. Formal Education: This is the type of education which is received in the regular formal school setting, for instance, the primary, secondary and tertiary institutions. Informal Education: This process of education includes all other agencies of learning outside the formal learning system. These agencies include the home (family), church or mosque, peer-group, mass-media. Non-Formal Education: This form of education has some basic characteristics of formal education like planned programme of action, contact persons, programmed assignment or examination and others, but it is not formal. It's a polymorphic process when it involves different activities. It's said to be dynamic when it involves the teacher,learners and materials/methods. Teaching proceed from simple to complex, from general to specific, from known to unknown, from descriptive to comparative, from concrete to abstract. Abimbola & Abolade (2008) defined teaching as a social services centered to the business of Education. Moleska (1982) explained teaching as a noble profession. Teaching is unique to other professions because every other professions emanate from it. The end product of teaching is learning. In teaching process, the teacher is the encoder or sender. While the student (s) is/are the decoder/receiver (s). What is Profession A proffession is a job that requires special skills or knowledge through special proving with high level of Education. Note: Before you can be a classroom teacher, you must be professionally qualified. A profession teacher is a person who molds ideas, habit and attitude of learner. PROFESSIONALIZATION Professionalization is a proces involving improvement in the status and practice of the profession and the practitional continually upgrades in knowledge, skills and attitude. It's simply a process by which a vocation, job or occupation transform itself into a profession of high Standard Integrity and competence. It also means improvement of skills, Knowledge, attitude and ethical orientation which a teacher needs for good conduct and practice. They are those thing teaching entails to characters or behaviors of how to know a good teacher. It's derived from the Latin word 'ethos" which means character. It's simply a set of principles of right and wrong behavior guiding or representative of a specific culture, society, group or individual. It's a moral belief that influence teacher's behavior and ideas in teaching. It can also be defined as realization of good and identification of bad in our daily dealings. It reflects implications of what a teacher should say or do and she/get shouldn't say or do in critical and confusing situation It's a very important concept because it sets in limit that we have to abide by in our professional things. It makes us not to trespass beyond our boundary. It's continuous process and not based on solving a particular task. The end product of learning is change. It's a progressive process in life. It's the relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of experience. Domains of learning We have three domains of learning, propounded by B.S Bloom. They are ; Cognitive domain (the head) deals with mental/intellectual skills Affective domain (heart) deals with feelings, emotions of students, towards academic. Psycho motor domain (hand) deals with acquisition/manipulative skills. They are simply refer to as 3Hs The head (cognitive) The heart (affective) The hand (psychomotor) Note training is different from learning. METHODS OF TEACHING There are several method of teaching. They includes; Play way method: is the method used in nursery & primary school. The father of Play way method is Maria Montessori. Lecture method: is the method that allows teacher to pass information without instructional materials. It's also known as content transmission. It's the most economical method and it's use for large class. Plato is the father of lecture method. Discussion method: is the best in a class room Condition. It was introduced by Socrates and can also be regarded to as Socratic method. It's also refers to as question and answer method. It's the most interactive method. Project method: This method allows the students to carry out assignments and specific task on their own. The father of project method is John Dewey. It is necessary step to be taken along as there are decisions to be made. Decisions about selection (admission) are usually taken after an evaluation of candidates' knowledge, aptitude, skills or disposition, The sole aim is to ensure that teaching & learning are successfully accomplished. Types of Evaluation Formative Evaluation: Provides continuous information about effectiveness of teaching and learning. It is undertake in an ongoing program Summative Evaluation: Occurs at the end of a programme to determine its overall effectiveness. it's designed to judge learners overall performance. Prognostic Evaluation : takes place before the beginning of instructional program to determine previous knowledge. Diagnostic Evaluation is undertaken at intervals within an instructional program to identify learners difficulties. It's a point of setting any industrial and educational dispute within a given society. They are several trade Union, they includes; NLC- Nigeria Labour Congress (1978) NMA- Nigeria Medical Association (1957) ASUU- Academic Staff Union of Universities (1978) NASU- Non Academic Staff of Universities (1977) ASUP- Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (1978) NUT- National Union of Teacher (1931) For this course, we will discuss NUT. HISTORY OF NUT Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) was founded in July 1931 by the amalgamation of the first two (2) teachers Associations in Nigeria, namely, Lagos Union of Teachers (LUT), formed in 1925 with its founding President as Rev. Ransome Kuti, formed in 1926. At an inaugural meeting of the two (2) groups held at CMS Grammar School, Lagos on 8th and 9th July, 1931, a Constitution was drafted and ratified and the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) was officially launched after accommodating other Teachers’ Associations from Agege, Ibadan and Abeokuta. The following officers were elected at the inaugural meeting:- 1. Rev. Isreal Oladotun Ransome Kuti – National President 2. Arch. Deacon J.O. Lucas – National Vice President 3. Mr. T.K. Cameron – Honorary General Secondary These three (3) officers became the first pillars of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). Other key members at the inaugural meeting were Rev. Emmanuel O. Alayande, Rev. Seth I. Kale, Mr. E.N.E. Nkumo and Mr. T.J.O. Sanyade who was the protem Secretary at the inaugural meeting. Shetima Shehu Ajiram – President 2. Mallam Abubakar Tafawa Balewa – 1st Vice President 3. Mallam Aminu Kano – General Secretary 4. Mallam Abdurahman Mera – Asst. General Secretary With the creation of States in 1966, the structure of the NUT was re-adjusted to reflect the different States in Nigeria in place of the former regional structure and to achieve a truly National status of Teachers Union in Nigeria, the leaders had a meeting of minds for the merger of the NUT and the Northern Teachers’ Association which later became the Northern States Teachers’ Union (NSTU) with the creation of States that split the North into six (6) States in 1966. On 27th May, 1972 the merger of the NUT and the NSTU was accomplished in Kaduna at the NNA School on Muri Road. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF NUT i. To foster unity and progress among all teachers in Nigeria. ii. To foster the spirit of active co-operation and comradeship between teachers and other workers. iii. To raise the status of the teaching profession through improved quality of education and conditions of service. iv. To promote and advance the course of education and the teaching profession throughout the federation and also endeavor to secure the removal of difficulties, abuses, anomalies and obsolete regulations detrimental to progress. v.
