Echoes of Tomorrow CHAPTER ONE : Day of the Release February 29th, 2030. The annual Quantum Horizon Technology Showcase was in full swing, a spectacle of innovation and excitement. Hundreds of industry leaders, tech enthusiasts, and journalists filled the enormous hall, buzzing with anticipation. All eyes were on the Echo Scanner, Quantum Horizon’s most anticipated invention. Backstage, Dr. Anara Lin couldn’t stop pacing, nervously adjusting her glasses. “Has anyone seen Mr. Mercer?” she asked a group of assistants, her voice tight. “Sorry, Dr. Lin, we haven’t,” one of them replied. “What about Lex? Where’s Lex?” Her eyes darted around the room, but the assistants only exchanged puzzled looks. “Didn’t you hear?” a voice behind her said. Anara turned to see Ethan Rhodes, another scientist, leaning against the doorway, a smirk on his face. “Hear what?” she asked, her brow furrowing. “Alex Harper quit,” Ethan said nonchalantly, crossing his arms. “What? When?” Confusion spread across Anara’s face. “Yesterday. Don’t know if he quit or was fired. Word around the lab is... he found something.” Why would Alex leave just before the showcase? Something didn’t sit right, but before she could ask Ethan any more questions, the door swung open. Vincent Mercer walked in, his polished demeanor commanding attention. “Dr. Lin,” Vince greeted her with his usual coldness. “Is everything ready?” “Yes, sir,” Anara replied, forcing herself to stay composed. “Everything’s set.” Vince gave a brief nod. “Good. Let’s begin.” The crowd cheered as Vince Mercer took the stage, his name echoing across the hall. From a distance, his smile seemed genuine, but up close, the cracks in his facade were visible. “Thank you all for coming,” Vince began, his voice smooth but distant. “This year has been full of groundbreaking advancements in science and technology, but the greatest by far was achieved by our own Dr. Anara Lin.” The applause was deafening as Vince gestured for Anara to take the spotlight. “Hello, everyone,” Anara said, her voice soft but steady as she took the microphone. “Today, we are proud to unveil something truly revolutionary—the Echo Scanner.” A massive hologram materialized above the stage, displaying a sleek pair of glasses. “With this device, you can see and communicate with alternate versions of yourself, from other realities. Learn from them, take their advice, and become the best version of you.” The crowd roared with excitement, but Anara barely registered it. She was focused, trying to shake the strange feeling gnawing at her gut. “And the best part?” Anara continued. “It’s customizable. Whether it’s glasses, a watch, or even contact lenses, the Echo Scanner adapts to your needs.” The applause reached a fever pitch as Anara finished her presentation and stepped back. Suddenly, a low tremor rippled through the glass ceiling above. At first, it was barely noticeable, like a whisper of wind. Then, with a deafening crack, the glass shattered, raining down shards onto the screaming crowd. Dark figures descended through the chaos, their movements swift and silent, like shadows armed with deadly precision. Anara froze, her mind racing as the masked figures approached the stage. Her heart pounded in her chest—this wasn’t supposed to happen. They weren’t just here for the tech; they were after something far more valuable. Vince, however, was already shouting commands to the security team, his voice unnervingly calm. But there was something in his eyes—a flicker of emotion Anara couldn’t quite place. Fear? Or something more dangerous? The leader of the masked men stepped forward, his voice cold and commanding. “Get what we came for.” He scanned the stage with a sharp, calculating gaze, not lingering on the Echo Scanners, but searching for something—someone. Without warning, one of the figures slipped through the chaos toward the Echo Scanners. Their gloved hands moved with practiced precision as they deployed a small device that activated with a soft beep. Anara's breath caught in her throat as she realized the implication: they weren’t here to destroy the machines; they were here to steal them. The scanners hummed quietly, but their screens flickered for a moment, as if sensing the intrusion. The masked figure connected a sleek cable to one of the scanners, transferring data and effectively downloading the Echo Scanner’s secrets. “This will change everything,” the figure muttered, a grin hidden behind the mask. Anara squinted through the chaos, her heart pounding. “No!” she screamed, but her voice was lost in the clamor of panic. The leader of the masked men nodded once, signaling his team to finish the operation. “We have what we need. Move!” As the crowd panicked and security struggled to regain control, Vince's voice rang out, authoritative and cold. But his gaze flickered toward the scanners for a moment, and Anara caught the unease in his eyes. He knew something wasn’t right. Before anyone could react, the masked figures slipped back into the chaos, vanishing as swiftly as they had appeared. The event descended into confusion, with security scrambling to regain order, but the Echo Scanners were already gone. They appeared intact on the surface, but beneath their sleek exteriors, the technology that held so much promise had been ripped away—stolen in a matter of moments. As the crowd was being ushered out, the masked men had vanished into thin air. Security scrambled to lock down the exits, halting everyone at the entrance. Tension replaced panic as the search began, and security officers interrogated every single person, trying to find the ones responsible. But it was as if the assailants had disappeared entirely, leaving behind nothing but whispers of a conspiracy much larger than anyone could comprehend.
