Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. SCIENCE II Lesson 3: Earth’s Natural Resources 1ST TRIMESTER Objectives: ✓ Describe the things in our surroundings; ✓ Relate the importance of the Earth’s natural resources to people and other living things; ✓ Identify the problem that may cause disruption in nature and destruction to the surroundings; and ✓ Identify the solutions to different environmental problems Reference Card EARTH’S NATURAL RESOURCES Anything that is found in nature that can be used by living things is a natural resource. This includes water, forests, fossil fuels, minerals, plants, animals and even air. Living things depend on natural resources to survive. People need water to drink, air to breathe and wood or metal to build a shelter. We also need to power our cars and heat our homes. Kinds of Natural Resources 1. Renewable Resources -resources which can be easily replaced for a short period of time. 2. Non- Renewable Resources - resources which take a very long period of time to form. Examples of Renewable Resources Animals are considered as natural resources. They provide us with many valuable products. MGSSSI : School Year 2024-2025 Earth’s Natural Resources 2 Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. Farm animals give us food such as eggs, meat, fish, cheese, fresh milk and honey. Some animals also provide us with materials we need to make clothes, like cashmere fiber from cashmere goats and silk fiber from silkworms. Plants provide us with food, medicines, and other materials that enables us to make useful products. Fruits, vegetables, rice and flour are from plants. Plants provide materials for making furniture and for building a house. Many plants can be used to treat common ailments such as cough, diarrhea, and sores. Water is a very important natural resource. Every living thing needs water to survive. Water can be found in oceans, rivers, lakes, underground and frozen in glaciers. Only a small amount of water on Earth is freshwater. You and your pet need water to keep your bodies hydrated and cool. The plants need water to stay alive. You use water to take a bath, wash your dirty clothes, clean your house and to wash and cook food. Air contains various gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide. The air that surrounds the Earth is called atmosphere. People, animals and plants need air to survive. Air has oxygen that people and animals need for breathing. The air around you has carbon dioxide that the plants need to make their own food. Air is used to inflate balloons, automobile or bicycle tires. Wind, which is the moving air, is used to run windmills. Windmills are used to produce electricity, which lights our homes and run machines. Examples of Non-Renewable Resources Soil is one of Earth’s most valuable natural resources. Every living thing on land directly or indirectly depends on soil. Some animals live in the soil. MGSSSI : School Year 2024-2025 Earth’s Natural Resources 2 Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. Most plants grow in soil. Soil contains water and minerals that plants need to survive. People grow crops on soil. Metals, like iron, are used to make bridges and railroads. Minerals, such as diamonds and gold, are used to make jewelry. Fossil fuels are natural materials that are formed deep within the Earth from decomposing remains of ancient animals and plants. Over a very long period of time, heat and pressure turn these remains into fuels. Examples: coal, natural gas, petroleum and oil Coal is used as fuel to produce electricity. Oil is used as fuel to run automobiles (gasoline). Natural gas is used as fuel to cook our food (LPG). Using Our Natural Resources Wisely The Earth’s natural resources are abundant. However, if people will not use it wisely, they can be used up. Everyone can make resources last longer if they conserve. To conserve means to use the resources wisely. There are ways in which we can help: 1. Conserve water Take a quick shower instead of a bath. Turn off the faucet as you brush your teeth. 2. Conserve fossil fuels Ride a bike instead of using a car. Open windows to let fresh air in and ventilate a room. Turn off the light when leaving a room. 3. Protects land, water and air from pollution. Plant trees and other plants. Dispose of chemicals and trash properly. 4. Reduce Reduce the purchase and use of products. Buy only what you need and use all of what you buy. Eat all the food on your plate. Do not get food that you cannot consume. MGSSSI : School Year 2024-2025 Earth’s Natural Resources 2 Mother Goose Special School System, Inc. Think first if you really need bottled water or juice before you buy it. 5. Reuse Reuse materials in their original form instead of throwing them away. Instead of throwing away your old clothes or toys, you can give them to your siblings or other children who can use them. Do not use plastic bags. Instead, bring reusable bags to carry the items you buy when you go shopping. Bring your own reusable bottle or container, like a tumbler. 6. Recycle Recycle used or waste products. Recycling is the process of collecting, separating, and converting used or waste products into new materials. Buy and use notebooks made of recycled materials. Also, you can collect the clean pages of your old notebooks and make new ones. Collect plastic bottles and tin cans can turn into pencil holders or flowerpots.
