EARTH & LIFE SCIENCE SUBJECT TEACHER: MS. CYREL T. CATAP THINK WISELY! 2 SUBSYSTEMS OF THE EARTH ATMOSPHERE HYDROSPSERE GEOSPHERE BIOSPHERE CRYOSPHERE 3 4 ATMOSPHERE It is the thin layer made up of a mixture of gases and particles suspended in the air that surrounds the earth. 5 ATMOSPHERE 78% N 21% O 0.9% Ar 0.1% other gases What are these other gases? CO2 CH4 H2O Ne 6 LET’S STUDY ATMOSPHERE! 7 5 LAYERS OF ATMOSPHERE Can you differentiate the 5 layers of the atmosphere? 8 EXOSPHERE It is the outermost layer of our atmosphere. “Exo” means outside. It is the very edge of our atmosphere. 9 THERMOSPHERE The thermosphere is a layer of Earth's atmosphere that is directly above the mesosphere and below the exosphere. 10 MESOSPHERE The mesosphere is directly above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere. It extends from about 50 to 85 km (31 to 53 miles) above our planet. 11 STRATOSPHERE “Strat” means layer. This layer of our atmosphere has its own set of layers. There are no storms or turbulence here to mix up the air, so cold, heavy air is at the bottom and warm, light air is at the top. 12 TROPOSPHERE The troposphere is the lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere. Most types of clouds are found in the troposphere, and almost all weather occurs within this layer. 13 Where is the ozone layer? 14 15 -It shields us and other living things from the sun's harmful ultraviolet What is ozone radiation layer? 16 -is an attempt to define a boundary between our atmosphere and What is outer space. Karman Line? 17 HYDROSPHERE A hydrosphere is the total amount of water on a planet. The hydrosphere includes water that is on the surface of the planet, underground, and in the air. A planet's hydrosphere can be liquid, vapor, or ice. 18 19 What is evaporation? -the process of turning from liquid into vapor 20 What is condensation? -the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid 21 What is precipitation? -is the water released from the clouds in the form of rain, hail or snow. 22 What is transpiration? -Transpiration is the evaporation of water from plants. 23 What is sublimation? -is the process where a solid changes its phase and turns directly into gas without passing through a liquid phase. 24 GEOSPHERE The geosphere is the earth itself: the rocks, minerals, and landforms of the surface and interior. 25 26 What are the 3 layers of geosphere? -Crust -Mantle -Core 27 What is crust? - The Earth's crust is an extremely thin layer of rock that makes up the outermost solid shell of our planet. 28 What is mantle? - The mantle is just one of Earth's mechanical layers. It is the largest and thickest layer of the geosphere stretching from below the crust to the outer core ~2,900 kilometers. 29 What is core? - The Earth's core is the part of Earth in the middle of our planet. - It has a solid inner core and a liquid outer core. 30 DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROCKS ❑Igneous rocks ❑Sedimentary rocks ❑Metamorphic rocks 31 32 BIOSPHERE The biosphere is made up of the parts of Earth where life exists—all ecosystems. The biosphere, also known as the ecosphere, is the worldwide sum of all ecosystems. It can also be termed the zone of life on Earth. 33 34 What are the 2 components of ecosystem ? - Biotic - Abiotic 35 What is biotic components? - This are the living things 36 What is abiotic components? - This are the non-living things 37 38 What is the vital function of niche in the ecosystem? - It describes the role an organism plays in a community. 39 CRYOSPHERE The cryosphere is the frozen water part of the Earth system. This includes frozen parts of the ocean, such as waters surrounding Antarctica and the Arctic. 40 THANK YOU!
