It has become the main method of communication, getting information and education, attaining services from businesses, hospitals, utilities, government, purchasing products and services, doing personal and Information and communications technology (ICT) refers to all technology that is used to handle telecommunication and access information. It also includes broadcast media, management systems, and network-based control. It includes the use of computers, radio, television, cellular phones, network hardware and software, internet connections, satellite systems, applications needed for video conferencing and distance learning in the field of education. ICT has also widened its horizons in developing new tools or emerging technologies. However, the present information superhighway mainly utilizes the advantages of the tools’ mobility. Mobile devices can communicate through the following communication technologies: Wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) – a type of wireless local area network technology. Bluetooth – uses packet-based transmission over short range radio signals. Third generation (3G), fourth generation (4G), global system for mobile communications (GSM), and general packet radio service (GPRS) Data services – data networking services for mobile phones. Dial-up services – data networking services using modems and telephone lines. Virtual private networks (VPN) – secure access to a private network. Emerging Technologies 1. Artificial intelligence (AI) – the branch of computer science focused with making computers work and act like humans. 2. Robotics – the field of computer science and engineering concerned with creating devices that can move and react to sensory input. It is a form of artificial intelligence. 3. Biometrics – In ICT, biometrics is the technology used to measure and analyze human body characteristics such as DNA, fingerprints, eye retinas and irises, voice patterns, facial patterns, and hand measurements, mainly for 4. Quantum cryptography – the science of encoding and decoding information or messages which depends on physics, not mathematics. It is used for information privacy and security. 5. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) – the use of computers to assist in the translation of one or more natural languages into another or others, and vice versa. The World Wide Web We can send and receive information on the internet through the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web is an information system on the Internet that allows documents to be connected to other documents by hypertext links, enabling the user to search for information by moving from one document to another. Types of Web Pages Web 1.0 or The Web. It is the first stage of the World Wide Web evolution. It is a flat or stationary page since it cannot be manipulated by the user. Web 2.0 or The Social Web allows users to interact with the page, the user may be able to comment or create a user account. Most website that we visit today are Web 2.0. Web 3.0 or Semantic Web. The semantic web provides a framework that allows data to be shared and reuse to deliver web content specifically targeting the user. Search Engine will learn about you and your habits from each search you perform and will gather details about you from your previous activities like likes and social postings and present the answers as per your Online Platforms and Sites A platform is defined as a group of technologies that are used as a base upon which other applications, processes, or technologies are developed. Online platforms are developed using the Internet and has revolutionized access to any information. Online platforms currently include, but not limited to: 1. Social Media platforms Social media platform is a web-based technology that allows the development, deployment, and management of social media solutions and services. This allow large group of people to create, share or exchange information, interest and the information shared can be in the form of ideas, pictures, videos, or anything that you want to create and share to virtual communities. Social media platforms can be in the form of: Social networks – these sites allow you to connect with other people with the same interests or background. Bookmarking sites – these are sites that allow you to store and manage links to various websites and resources. Social news – these are sites that allow you to upload and share media content like images, music, and video. Media sharing sites can be specific for video sharing, photo sharing, slide sharing, social bookmarking, Microblogging – these are sites that focus on short updates from the user. Those subscribed to the user will be able to receive these updates. Posts are brief that range typically from 140 – 200 characters. Blogs and forums – these are websites that allow users to post their content. Other users can comment on the said topic. 2. E-commerce platforms E-commerce platform is a collection of software technologies that allows merchants to create a storefront on the internet. Example of an e- commerce platform is Alibaba.com founded by Jack Ma, a Chinese business magnate and investor. 3. Online learning platforms Online learning platform is an incorporated set of interactive online services that provides the teachers, learners, parents, and others involved in the education sector with a wide range of tools and resources to support and enhance the delivery and management of education through the internet. Edmodo and Google Classroom are examples of 4. Online video platforms Video platform is a service providing end-to-end tools used to create, customize, publish, and manage videos online. 5. Presentation or Visualization platforms These platforms allow you to present and share presentations, infographics, and videos with other people. It is used to communicate information clearly and efficiently. 6. Cloud Computing platforms Cloud computing platform or also called as “the cloud”, is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet. Instead of using your computer’s hard drive, you store and access 7. File Management platforms File management platform is used for the storing, naming, sorting, and handling of computer files. Allows you to convert and manage files without download in the software tool. 8. Mapping platforms Mapping platform is a transformation taking the points of one space into the points of the same or another place. It uses Global Positioning System (GPS) to detect location and used for navigation. ICT in the Context of Global Communication ICT plays an important part in our lives and in all aspects in our society. It has become the main method of communication, getting information and education, attaining services from businesses, hospitals, utilities, government, purchasing products and services, doing personal and business transactions, and expressing social The following are the applications of ICT is some aspects of the society: ICT in Education Modern homes have computers for research and learning by students and the family for school lessons. They are also used to learn about other people, places, current events, and recent technologies. Computers in schools are used for fast, easy, and effective instruction and learning in Computer, Math, Science and English. Teachers use images, videos, and Computer-Based Training (CBT) programs to present topics visually to 5 Positive Effects of technology on teaching & learning 1. Supplemental Teaching Tools 2. Motivate Students to Learn 3. Students Can Learn at Their Own Pace 4. Additional Resources for Students 5. Prepare Children for the Future ICT in Arts, Design, and Music Image and graphics design, photo editing, and music arrangements. Music and videos are shared online by their creators and can be downloaded for free or for a fee. ICT in Business and Accounting Accounting process is done using computers, like preparation of financial reports in fast and accurate manner. With gathered and researched information, computers can be used to predict future trends of business. Timely and accurate information to business managers will give them better decisions as where they would direct their business. Computers in groceries are used by cashiers to store prices of goods, determine inventory of goods, and locate the goods in the store. ICT in Engineering and Architecture Architects design houses, buildings, and bridges using Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs which is a lot faster and presentable. Mechanical engineers use computer in their work to design and build machineries and vehicles such as cars, boats, and airplanes with better aesthetics, accuracy, and safety.
