Slide 1 Approach to the dermatological diagnosis Shona McIntyre BVMS MRCVS Slide 2 Learning objectives Be able to : ▪ Be able to take an accurate dermatological history and construct a diagnostic plan ▪ Recognise common integument disease lesions and describe their causes and pathogenesis ▪ Recognise and choose appropriate diagnostics for integument disease diagnosis. Slide 3 History Taking A full clinical history is vitally important when trying to ascertain the cause and extent of a dermatological problem. It helps to have a structured approach to history taking as often owners do not recognise the significance of an animal’s routine or history. It can be helpful in some instances, especially if it is an ongoing case which you might have inherited from a colleague or a second opinion to have a questionnaire that the client fills out ahead of the consult. Slide 4 History Basic details about the animal: What is the owner’s chief complaint? Age When did they first notice this? Breed Has it occurred before? Sex Has there been previous tests or Colour treatments? Images adapted from Muller and Kirk’s Small Animal Dermatology #universityofsurrey 4 Age Not only age of animal but age when condition first started
