STAGE 5 Unit focus: The Titanic Text focus: Letter Dear Father, Dear Father Can you believe that I am writing this letter from the plushest room imaginable? We boarded the Titanic this morning, and it is beyond my wildest dreams. White Star Line have truly excelled themselves with their work. You wouldn’t believe the size of the dining hall. It barely seems possible that such a vast space could fit inside something that floats. Mother is looking forward to dancing as soon as they allow it. Ornate filigree, carved from dark wood, winds its way up grand staircases that lead to rooms even more exquisite than my own, I’m sure. Not that I’m complaining, of course. Your generosity in buying me my ticket is more than I could have asked for. Inside my own room, I am lucky to have the suite to myself. The bed is a simple but comfortable affair, with so silk sheets and the fluffiest pillow. I don’t suppose I shall enjoy my own bed so much when I return! It is quite possible that you have spoiled me, Father! Do you remember when we stayed at The Grand in London, and we were struck by how lavish the rooms were? Well, these are just as divine but on a miniature scale. It’s as though the creators took those rooms straight from the middle of London and shrank them down to fit this boat. What clever men they must be to do such a thing! I do feel like quite the rascal, I must say. It’s not even close to supper time yet, but as soon as I was settled, I set out to investigate the tea room! It is packed with round, white tables that are draped in delicate doilies. I could hear the constant clatter of china cups and teapots in some distant room, and I didn’t want to draw attention to myself, so I le rather hastily. I can’t wait to dine there later, though. When we arrived in Southampton this morning, just a er 9, I was rather glad. There were already hundreds of people milling about trying to board, and I didn’t want to be last on. We were boarded by 10—a most efficient company indeed—and I’m now a little bored as we wait to depart. The plan is to leave the harbour A ding ro und e um http://www.literacyshedplus.com C u r r ic ul Th all resources ©2020 Literacy Shed Rea at midday and make our way to France by this evening. When we arrive there, I shall write to you again to let you know how it feels to be at sea. Mother and I can’t wait to be the first people in our family to leave the shores of England! What fun adventures we shall have! Yours faithfully, Your loving daughter VOCABULARY FOCUS 1. Which word in the first paragraph tells you that the room is well-decorated? 2.
