What is Puberty? • • • • Time of change from child to adult Body reaches maturity Emotional and physical changes Bodies develop and become fertile What Does Fertile Mean? Boys start to make sperm cells Girls start to make egg cells When a sperm enters the egg cell, a baby is formed. When do I start puberty? Boys (Ages 10-15) • • • Girls (Ages 8-14) Everyone is different Everyone will start and finish at a different time This is normal What Makes Puberty Start? The pituitary gland sends a signal to the body in boys and girls to produce the hormone that starts puberty. Do Boys and Girls Produce the Same Hormone? In Girls: In Boys: The pituitary gland sends a signal to the ovaries to produce estrogen and progesterone. The pituitary gland sends a signal to the testicles to produce testosterone. Estrogen and Progesterone • Progesterone prepares the female body to have children • Estrogen produces the changes in the female body, making your body curvier and developing breasts. Like progesterone, it also helps prepare your body to have children. • Males also produce small amounts of estrogen and progesterone. Testosterone • Testosterone helps develop male physical characteristics such as growth spurts and body hair. • Females also produce small amounts of testosterone. Some Body Changes for Both Boys and Girls • • • • • Oily hair Acne or pimples on skin Body odor More sweating Body hair Oily Hair • Wash your hair every day or every other day • Use warm water and a small amount of shampoo Acne • Prevent oil buildup by washing face with mild soap or cleanser • Wash face gently • Purchase oil-free moisturizer or other skin products • Avoid touching face Body Odor • Bathe or shower every day using a mild soap and warm water. This will help wash away any bacteria that contribute to the smells. • Wearing clean clothes, socks, and underwear each day. • Use deodorant Sweat • Wear cotton or other breathable fabric • Stay in the shade • Roll on antiperspirants Body/Facial Hair • It is up to you if you want to shave or not. • Some boys want to grow facial hair. • Some girls want to leave armpit hair. • It is totally okay if you want to keep body or facial hair!
