INSIGHTS INTO ONE’S PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SITUATION: A lady can say “i’m ugly” yet others consider her very charming or coversely, one can have the illusion of saying “I am very intelligent or competent” when most of his ideas sound unreasonable or illogical to most of the people. There is indeed a big difference between what you see in yourself(real self-image) and what is projected in the eyes of the others (your social image). HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT Developmental scientist identified the three aspects or domains of human development as (Papalia and Feldman 2012): 1. Physical Development – which covers the growth of the body and the brain, motor and sensory skills, and even physical health; 2. Cognitive Development – which covers our capacity to learn, to speak, to understand, to reason, and to create; and 3. Psychosocial Development – which includes our social interactions with other people, our emotions, attitudes, self-identity, personality, beliefs, and values. While human development covers the whole lifespan of human existence in relation to the three domains, personal development is one’s own development and growth within the context of the three aspects of human development. Human development is also influenced by: a. Heredity or inborn traits passed on by the generations of offspring from both sides of the biological parents’ families; b. Environment – is the world outside of ourselves and the experiences that result from our contact and interaction with this external world; and c. Maturation – is the natural progression of the brain and the body that affects the cognitive (thinking and intelligence), psychological (emotion, attitude, and self- identity), and social (relationships) dimensions of a person. The influence of physical maturation over a person’s development is most pronounced during his childhood and adolescence stages. IS IT PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT OR PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT? You must be familiar with the term Personality Development and must have heard of learning places where you could enroll to learn skills like table etiquette, how to sit and walk properly with grace, how to dress up appropriately, and how to communicate better and others. Training in these skills bring about noticeable transformation and improvement in one’s personality. Personality Development has given birth to many related businesses that span the globe. It includes image enhancement suck as skin care, and make-up, fashion and clothing, and even body contouring; modeling and beauty pageants; and many others. PERSONAL PERSONALITY Belonging or relating to a The set of emotional qualities, particular person ways of behaving. Etc., that makes a person different from Made or designed to be used other people; by one person Attractive qualities 9such as Someone whose job involves energy, friendliness, and humor) working for or helping a that make a person interesting or particular person; and pleasant to be with; Of relating to, or affecting a Attractivequalities that make particular person something unusual or interesting. DEVELOPMENT? The act or process of growing or causing something to grow or become larger or more advanced The act or process of creating something over a period of time; and The state of being created or made more advanced. IS THERE A MAJOR DIFFERENCE? PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT It is a process in which persons reflect upon themselves, understand who they are, accept what they discover about themselves, and learn (unlearn) new sets of values, attitudes, behavior, and thinking skills to reach their fullest potential as human beings. Zorka Hereford in her book, 9 Essential Life Skills – A Guide for Personal Development and Self Realization, defined personal development as “the process of striving to be the best that you can be in order to reach and realize your full potential. It is a journey of self- discovery, self-improvement, and self- realization.” SELF-CONCEPT Adolescence – is the time when young people start to ask questions about themselves, about their future, and even about their religious and political beliefs. Ideal Self - is the self that you aspire to be. Actual Self – is the one that you actually see. It is the self that has characteristics that you were nurtured or, in some cases, born to have. SELF-CONCEPT Self-concept refers to your awareness of yourself. The Actual Self is built on self-knowledge. Self Knowledge is derived from social interactions that provide insight into how others react to you. The actual self is who we actually are. It is how we think, how we feel, look and act. The actual self can be seen by others, but because we have no way of truly knowing how others view us, the actual self is our self-image. The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to be. It is idealized image that we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced. The ideal self could include components of what our parents have taught us, what we admire in others, what our society promotes, and what we think is in our best interest. There is negotiation that exists between the two selves which is complex because there are numerous exchanges between the ideal self and actual self. These exchanges are exemplified in social roles that are adjusted and re-adjusted, and are derived from outcomes of social interactions from infant to adult development. If the way that I am (the actual self) is aligned with the way that I want to be (the ideal self), then I will feel a sense of metal well-being or peace of mind. If the way that I am is not aligned with how I want to be, the incongruence, or lack of alignment, will result in mental distress or anxiety. PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS means making use of all the personal resources, talents, skills, energy and time, to enable you to achieve your goals. Your knowledge of yourself and how you manage yourself impacts directly on your personal effectiveness. Being-self- aware, making the most of your strengths, learning new skills and techniques and behavior flexibility are all keys to improving your personal performance. 7 BASIC PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS SKILLS 1.
