DATA COLLECTION AND MANAGEMENT GROUP 1 WHAT IS DATA? refers to raw facts and figures that can be processed and analyzed to extract meaningful information. It can be quantitative (numerical) or qualitative (descriptive) and serves as the foundation for research, decision-making, and various analytical processes. WHAT IS DATA COLLECTION? Data collection is the systematic process of gathering and recording information or data from various sources for analysis, interpretation, and decision-making. It is a fundamental step in research, business operations, and virtually every field where information is used to understand, improve, or make informed choices. WHAT IS DATA MANAGEMENT? Once the data is collected, it needs to be organized, stored, and maintained properly. Data management includes tasks like data entry, coding, verification, and ensuring data security and confidentiality. DATA SOURCES refers to where data is originally collected or where it is stored. This can be in various forms, such as databases or files on a computer system. The data source's format largely depends on its use and the system it's part of. Application: Observation allows teachers to gain a deeper understanding of student learning processes and identify areas where students may need additional support or challenge. It can also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies. EXAMPLES & APPLICATION Student Surveys: Example: Students complete surveys to provide feedback on the learning environment, teacher effectiveness, and their satisfaction with the curriculum. Application: Student surveys provide valuable insights into student perspectives and experiences, helping schools and teachers improve their programs and create a more supportive learning environment. WHAT IS DATA STORAGE? Data storage refers to the methods and technologies used to retain and manage digital information for future use. This encompasses a variety of devices and systems that capture, organize, and maintain data in a manner that allows for efficient retrieval and processing. WHAT IS DATABASE? a collection of interrelated data that helps in the efficient retrieval, insertion, and deletion of data from the database and organizes the data in the form of tables, views, schemas, reports, etc. A Database Management System (DBMS) is software designed to store, organize, and manage data efficiently. It consists of two key components: the database, which is a collection of interconnected data, and the management system, which ensures proper handling of data. TWO MAIN TYPES OF DBMS Relational Database Management System (RDBMS): This is considered the most mature type of database, where data is organized into tables with rows and columns linked through primary and foreign keys. This makes it popular for web-based applications and user data storage. Non-Relational Database Management System (NoSQL): This type of database offers flexibility beyond traditional relational structures, enabling efficient storage and retrieval of large, often unstructured datasets. It's well-suited for handling large volumes of data and fast queries.
