# Endometritis **Signs and Symptoms:** * Temperature of 102° that begins around one day postpartum * Tender, enlarged uterus * Prolonged, severe cramping * Foul-smelling lochia * Signs of uterine subinvolution (failure to shrink) * Elevated white blood cell count (WBC) **Treatment/Nursing Care:** * Administer antibiotics * Place the patient in Fowler's position to aid in the drainage of infected lochia. * Administer analgesics * Monitor for absent bowel sounds, abdominal distension, nausea, or vomiting, which may indicate the spread of infection. * Increase fluid intake. **Pelvic Pain:** * General discomfort that may be relieved with pain medication * Hematoma (blood collection) leading to severe, unrelenting pain that may not be relieved by analgesics. * Possible concealed blood loss * Potentially elevated pulse and respiratory rates, and decreased blood pressure. * Development of signs of hypovolemic shock (low blood volume). * Large hematomas may require drainage. **Nursing Care:** * Ice pack * Pain medication * Report to physician (MD) if severe pain is unresolved, inability to urinate, or if the patient cannot eat or drink (NPO) until seen by physician. **Important Note:** This information is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
