# Security in Contemporary World ## Topic 1: Meaning of Security Security refers to freedom from threats, protecting core values. Security is essential for every part of a system; destroying one element may destroy the entire system. **Traditional Notions:** * **External Security**: The greatest threat to a nation is military action by another country, harming sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity. **Responding to Threats:** A government can respond to threats in three main ways: 1. Surrender 2. Deterrence (raising costs of war to unacceptable levels for the opposing side). 3. Defense (fighting back to prevent the aggressor's objectives and defeat their forces). ## Topic 2: Components of Traditional Security Four key components of traditional security are: 1. **Deterrence**: Preventing war through policy. 2. **Defense**: Limiting or ending war. 3. **Balance of Power**: Maintaining a balanced relationship between larger and smaller countries. **Note**: There is a table showing average marks for various question categories for 2019, 2020, and 2023. Unfortunately, some cells in the table are blank. (The table is not fully visible in the image and important data may be missing.)
